Industrial Engineering Student Course Scheduling Information

Beginning in Fall 2003, St. Ambrose General Education requirements have changed significantly from earlier years.  If you began coursework at the university and have taken your first class during or after the Fall, 2003 semester, you will be under these new requirements.

Students who were enrolled in classes prior to Fall, 2003 have the option of continuing under the general education requirements stated in the catalog from the year he/she began study at St. Ambrose University, or students can adopt the new requirements.  Please talk to your advisor to see which general education requirements will best meet your goals.

Important Course Sequences!
It is most important that students begin the sequence of Math and Physics courses.   Failure to do so will put them behind schedule due to prerequisites!

Please review the Plan of Study and future course offerings for course selection guidance.  Be careful to check fall/spring semester offerings - some classes may only be offered in one semester.

Math 191 (offered in the Fall semester), then Math 192 (offered in the Spring semester) are the beginning courses.  If students are not ready for Math191, it is recommended that they take Math171 first.  Math171 is a new math course that will appear in the new catalog.  Math 151 and 152, or high school trigonometry and 2 units of high school algebra, if already taken, may qualify.

General Education Requirements

For students entering St. Ambrose Fall, 2003 or later:
General Education requirements may be found in the University catalog.  The following courses are required for a BSIE and also meet General Education requirements:

SKILLS CONTENT
  MATH 191   CHEM 103 or 105
  ENGL 101   PHIL 305 or PHIL 207
  PED 149   PHYS 251
  COMM 101
  IL 101

These courses are reflected in the New GenEd Audit sheet (PDF or Excel).

For students entering St. Ambrose Spring, 2003 or earlier:
There are some exceptions to the University's General Education requirements for Industrial Engineering students.  These differences are reflected in the Old GenEd Audit sheet (PDF or Excel) and are listed below:

Philosophy/Theology:  IE students require only 9 hours of philosophy and theology and must take PHIL 207 or 305.  The students can select an additional philosophy and an additional theology course.

Foreign Language/Literature: IE students who have had at least one full high school year of a foreign language need only take one literature course or FLAN 201, 202, 203 or 204.  IE students who have not met the high school foreign language requirement are required to take 3 hours of FLAN and can choose FLAN 201, 202, 203 or 204.  In cases where these FLAN courses are not offered, the student can elect to fulfill the normal general education 6 hour foreign language/literature.  It is recommended that the student plan to take one of the above course early to avoid having to take 3 additional hours as normally required.

ENGL218 (or ENGL217) is required.

Fine Arts:  Not all Fine Arts courses satisfy the IE major.  The student must select from those courses listed in the "IE Required Courses" notes.

Natural Sciences and Mathematics: CHEM 103 or 105 is required.

Social Science and Economics: Psyc105 is required. ECON101, ECON201, or ECON202 is required.  ECON101 is the best choice for IE students.

Physical Education: A PED activity is not required.  PED149 is required.
