Bees go 0-3 in St. Xavier Tournament

Chicago, IL-  The Fighting Bees could not get over the hump as they dropped three close games in the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament.

On Wednesday, the Bees fell to Calumet S. Joseph's 89-87. The Bees had a chance to win the game, but freshman guard Reggie Shipp's thirty foot jumper hit off the right side of the rim as time expired.

Down, 12 points with 4:57 remaining in the game, the Fighting Bees put on an impressive run to give themselves a chance to win. Josh Binder knocked down consecutive buckets to cut the lead to eight points.

Alex Burkle knocked down 1-2 free throws on the ensuing possession and following a George Kelly turnover, Reggie Shipp scored a lay-up as he was fouled to put the lead at just four points.

Alex Burkle cut the lead to two points with43 seconds remaining on a lay-up and the Bees chose not to foul. Wilfredo Escobar missed a three pointer with eight seconds to go in the game, but the Bees were stalled in the backcourt and only could get off a desperation three pointer at the buzzer.

Burkle led the Bees with 21 points on 7-15 shooting and also hauled in seven rebounds. Adam Fahrenkrog finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Reggie Shipp finished with 17 points and three assists and Brett Cole added 11 points.

On Thursday, the Bees took on St. Francis (IN). In the first half, the Bees used the fast break to build a generous lead. Alex Washington stole the ball from Chris Hobson and converted the lay-in to give the Bees a 40-28 lead with 3:07 to play in the first half. However, the Bees managed just one more basket the rest of the half and St. Francis cut the lead to just six points.

In the second half, St. Francis used a 14-8 run to open the half to tie the game at 50 apiece. On the next possession, Alex Burkle fouled Matt Edmonds and he converted the lay-in and the free throw to give St. Francis their first lead of the game. Once they took the lead, they never trailed again in the game.

The Bees got to within two points on an Alex Washington lay-up at the 8:14 mark but could not get over the hump as they fell 90-82.

Brett Cole led all scorers with 26 points on 10-17 shooting. The senior from Crystal Lake, Illinois was a perfect 5-5 from the line and recorded a double double by reeling in 10 rebounds. Alex Burkle scored 15 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and Alex Washington added 11 points.

The loss pitted the Bees against Siena Heights (MI) on Friday. Siena Heights, also losing their first two games in the tournament, used a late run in the first half to bust the game open. Up 27-23 with 4:28 left in the first half, Siena Heights went on a 16-4 run to close the half and put the Bees at a 16 point deficit at the half.

St. Ambrose hit just 10-29 shots from the field in the first half and went just 1-7 from the beyond the arc.

In the second half, the Bees offense was clicking on all cylinders, but they could not get the stops they needed to pull out the win. The Bees scored 50 points in the second half and hit 16-36 shots from the field. They recorded 11 offensive rebounds in the second half alone and hit 4-14 shots from three.

In spite of their production, the Bees could not overcome the 16-point first half deficit and eventually fell to Siena Heights 83-77.

After scoring just 1 point in the first half, Alex Burkle scored 21 points in the second half. Burkle finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, five of which were offensive.

Reggie Shipp recorded 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Brett Cole hit 2-3 shots from beyond the arc and scored 10 points for the game.

Adam Fahrenkrog finished with 19 points and reeled in six rebounds. On the weekend, Fahrenkrog averaged 13.9 points and 8.3 rebounds. For his efforts, he was named to the St. Xavier Holiday Tournament All-Tournament Team.

With the losses, the Bees now sit at 6-9 on the season. They will have a week between games when they head to Huntington, Indiana to take on Huntington University on December 29th.
