Bees Fahrenkrog named all-conference

DAVENPORT, Iowa- Adam Fahrenkrog, a senior from Long Grove, Iowa and a four year staple on the Bees basketball team, has been named to the Midwest Collegiate All-Conference squad.

Fahrenkrog led the Bees in scoring (13.7 ppg), rebounds (8.1 rpg), steals (1.7 spg) and blocks (1.0 bpg). Within the MCC, Fahrenkrog finished tenth in scoring, fifth in rebounding, tenth in free throw percentage and eighth in steals per game.

Fahrenkrog, who early this season became the 42nd Fighting Fighting Bee to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau for his career, led the team in scoring ten times and rebounding eighteen times this season.

Joining Fahrenkrog on the ten-man first team squad were: DeMonte Bynum -Player of the Year (Clarke), Michael Okpaleaze (Clarke), Pat Hoberg (Grand View), Brett Humpal (Iowa Wesleyan), Curtis Kilgore (Mount Mercy), Scott Buschmann (Viterbo), Jawaun Bowman (Waldorf), Andre Thompson (William Penn) and Joseph Powell (William Penn.)

"We are very pleased that Adam has been recognized for his accomplishments," Fighting Bees Coach Ray Shovlain said. "Adam has been a four-year leader both on and off the court at St. Ambrose, and it's nice to have a person of his character be recognized."

Sophomore Alex Burkle also garnered recognition from MCC coaches by being named an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection.

Clarke sharp shooting ends Bees season

DUBUQUE, Iowa- The Clarke Crusaders shot 60% from the field and poured in 12 threes as they knocked of the Fighting Bees 107-75 in the semifinals of the MCC Tourney.

The Bees, who knocked off Iowa Wesleyan in double overtime to get to the semifinals, could not get a defensive stop as Clarke scored on seemingly every possession.

DeMonte Bynum, the MCC's Player of the Year, was a one man wrecking crew in the first half. Bynum knocked in 21 of his game-high 30 points in the first half. Bynum went 7-7 from the line and hit 4-7 from three in the first frame to go along with 5 assists.

Bynum finished with 30 points and eight assists for the night.

The Bees could not get much going as they trailed by 20 points for most of the first half and 30 points for most of the second half.

The Bees finished the game shooting 41.5% (27-65) from the field and were out-rebounded 38-29.

St. Ambrose had three players reach double-digits. Brett Cole led the Bees with 14 points off the bench, all of which came in the second half. Cole finished 4-7 from the field and 4-5 from the line in 25 minutes of action.

Alex Washington dropped in 12 points on 6-9 shooting. He added two rebounds and two assists as well. Brett McGinnis rounded out the Bees double digits performers with 10 points on 3-5 shooting. McGinnis knocked in 2-3 from beyond the arc and went 2-2 from the line.

Brad Mohr gave the Bees a lift off the bench by knocking in eight points and grabbing three boards in his final game.

Adam Fahrenkrog finished his career with a 7 point, six rebound performance. Fahrenkrog only played 14 minutes due to foul trouble.

The Bees finished the season 7-9 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference and 13-19 overall. They graduate six seniors and their two leading scorers, Adam Fahrenkrog and Brett Cole.

Parrot banks buzzer beater in double overtime thriller

(February 27, 2008)

MT. PLEASANT, Iowa- Down by two points with 2.2 seconds left, the Bees season rested on a desperation play. With 94 seconds left to go on the final play, the Bees called timeout and drew up the game-winner.

Brett Cole took the ball out of bounds and threw a baseball pass to Adam Fahrenkrog. Fahrenkrog caught the leapt up at the top of the key and hit Parrot on the left wing. Parrot banked in a 25-foot three pointer off the glass to steal a win from Iowa Wesleyan in double overtime.

The Bees had multiple chances to win the game before Parrot's game-winner. Brett Cole knocked in a fade away from the free throw line, but was whistled for traveling at the end of regulation. In the first overtime, Cole was fouled with one second to go and shot two free throws for the game. Cole made the first but missed the second, extending the game to double overtime.

Cole was  the Bees go-to-guy for every critical shot down the stretch. He scored the Bees last nine points of regulation to force over time and tied the game at 85-all in double OT with a shot just inside the tree point line.

Cole finished with 24 points on 8-12 shooting from the field and 8-9 shooting from the line. He scored 15 of his 24 points in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime.

Before the dramatic ending, the Bees made an unbelievable comeback just to have a chance to win. The Bees trailed by as many as 20 points in the first half at 38-18 with 4:55 to go. The Bees rattled off a 14-4 run to pull within 10 points at the half.

The Bees continued to battle and took their first lead of the second half at 60-59 off an Alex Burkle three pointer with 5:37 to play in regulation.

For the game, Iowa Wesleyan's Brett Humpal led all scorers with 28 points. Fahrenkrog and Reggie Shipp joined Cole in double figures with 13 points apiece. Shipp led the Bees with eight rebounds.

With the win, the Bees advance to the semifinals of the MCC Tournament to take on #2 seeded Clarke College, who defeated Mount Mercy 77-72 in the opening round. The Bees split with Clarke, winning 68-66 at home and dropping 100-88 at Clarke. The Bees and the Crusaders will tip off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday in Dubuque.

Bees cold from field in loss

(February 23, 2008)

DES MOINES, Iowa- The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees turned in their worst shooting performance of the season as they managed to hit just 21-73  shots from the field in a 73-60 loss to Grand View.

The Bees started the game off with six missed shots from the field, two turnovers and two missed free throws before Alex Burkle got SAU on the board with a lay-up at the 14:28 mark. Burkle and Fahrenkrog were the only Bees starters to score in the first half and went a combined 2-9 from the field and 2-4 from the line. The other Bee starters went 0-7 in the first frame of action.

Despite shooting just 17.2% from the field and scoring 19 points, the Bees were only down 10 points at halftime.

The Bees offense returned in the second half but the defense did not as they were outscored 44-41 over the final half.

The Bees got to within three points of Grand View on three different occasions, but each time the Vikings answered with big baskets. Pat Hoburg hit a pair of free throws  and a jumper to kill the Bees runs and Rohan Greaves hit a triple to halt SAU's momentum.

The Bees bench outscored the starters as they accounted fro 33 of their 60 points. Bret t Cole led the Bees with 16 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. Cole went 4-4 from the line and hauled in nine rebounds in just 22 minutes of action.

Adam Fahrenkrog and Jamey Meyer were the only other players to reach double digits. Fahrenkrog had 13 points on 5-13 shooting from the field and grabbed 10 boards. Meyer scored all of his points in the second half and buried 3-5 shots from beyond the arc to finish with 11 points on the night.

No other Fighting Bee scored more than five points.

The loss dropped the Bees to a six place finish in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. They will begin tournament play on Wednesday, February 27th when they head to #3 seeded Iowa Wesleyan for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off with the Tigers.

Bees hold off Waldorf in overtime

DAVENPORT, Iowa- Neither team was able to score in the final two minutes of overtime as the Fighting Bees defeated Waldorf 79-78 in thrilling fashion.

With 45 seconds to go and up one point with the ball, the Fighting Bees took the clock down to 17 seconds before missing a Brett Cole jumper. Following the shot, Adam Fahrenkrog secured the loose ball but had it stolen from him by Evan Clasen. In the midst of the confusion from the turnover, Alex Dunwoody found a clear path to the basket but missed the lay-in as time expired.

The Bees put out their fewest turnovers of the season with just 7 miscues all day. Despite being out-rebounded by the Warriors, the lack of turnovers allowed the Bees to have enough possessions to win.

St. Ambrose, who trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, made a key run to end the half. Down 36-25 with 4:13 to go in the first half, the Bees went on a 10-1 run to cut the halftime deficit to two points. Five different Bees scored during the run.

At the end of regulation, the Bees had a chance to win the game. Brett Cole put the Bees up two points with two free throws with just 52 seconds remaining. The Warriors answered the score with a lay-in by Cedric Davis with 35 seconds to play. Following a timeout, the Bees held for one shot, but Reggie Shipp's jumper from the left corner fell short to force overtime.

Reggie Ship led the Bees with a game-high 17 points. This marked the third straight game that he has led the Bees in scoring. Shipp also hauled in a team-high seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Alex Burkle gave the Bees a lift off the bench with 13 points. The 6'6 sophomore went 5-9 from the field and hit 3-4 free throws.

Alex Washington also racked up 13 points and five rebounds in 27 minutes of action. Adam Fahrenkrog rounded out the double-digit performers with 10 points. He went 6-8 from the line and grabbed six rebounds as well.

The Bees, winners of two in a row, finished the MCC with a 7-1 mark at Lee Lohman Arena. Their lone conference home loss came to Grand View 95-85 on January 26th. The Bees will have a chance to avenge that loss when they finish the regular season at Grand View on February 23rd.

Bees knock off #5 Statesmen

DAVENPORT, Iowa- The tale of two seasons continued for the Bees as they proved to play their best basketball at home by knocking off the #5 William Penn Statesmen 94-84.

The Fighting Bees raced out to a 7-0 lead after an Alex Washington three pointer and back-to-back lay-ups by Reggie Shipp and Kevin Mullen. William Penn answered with a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game at 9-9.

That would be as close as the Statesmen would get as the Bees never trailed at any point in the game.

The Bees defense stymied William Penn in the first half as SAU used turnovers to create easy scores. Following a Joe Womack turnover, Adam Fahrenkrog fired the ball up to Alex Burkle for a emphatic dunk. Burkle's slam gave the Bees their biggest lead of the game at 21 points with just 2:43 to go in the first half.

Trailing 44-23, Williem Penn went on a run of their own. The Statesmen closed out the half on a  9-0 run to  bring the deficit to twelve points at the break.

The Fighting Bees started the second half just like the first half by jumping out with a 9-3 run. Jamey Meyer knocked down a three pointer and a free throw, Alex Washington buried a three and Reggie Shipp hit two free throws to build the lead to 18 points.

Shooting a combined 29 free throws in the first half, the fouls continued to pour in as both teams paraded to the line in the second half. The two teams combined to shoot 49 free throws and committed 30 fouls in the second half alone. They combined for 54 fouls and 77 free throws in all.

The Bees made the most of their trips to the line as they knocked in 32-46 (69.6%) from the stripe. The Statesmen knocked in 23-31 (74.2%) for the game.

Down the stretch, the Bees trio of freshman handled the Penn pressure and made the big plays. With just 2:47 to go, the Bees were up 12 points when William Penn started scoring on every possession. The Bees answered with a pair of free throws by Kevin Mullen and back-to-back jumpers by Reggie Shipp and Jamey Meyer. Mullen knocked in one more free throw and Jamey Meyer hit two in the final seconds to seal the game.

Collectively, the Bees freshmen played their best basketball game of the season in the biggest game of the year. Mullen scored eight points in 26 minutes of action, but had just two turnovers against intense pressure from William Penn.

Jamey Meyer dropped in 15 points on 4-8 shooting from the field, including 2-5 from beyond the arc and 5-6 from the line. Meyer hauled in five rebounds, had three assists and committed zero turnovers in 28 minutes of work.

Reggie Shipp continued to play his best basketball of the season. Shipp, who is averaging 20.1 points over the last three games, dropped in 17 to lead all scorers. Shipp hit 6-8 shots from the field and 4-6 from the line. He had six assists and five rebounds while playing in all but five minutes of the game.

Alex Washington had a strong performance for the Bees as well. Washington scored 13 points, but held William Penn's leading scorer, Andre Thompson (15.9 ppg) to just 10 points. Thompson, who torched the Bees for 32 points in their first meeting, scored eight of his points from the line.

Brett Cole rounded out the Bees top performers with 15 points. Cole, who was 3-4 from the field and 2-2 from three, knocked in 7-9 free throws to keep the Statesmen at bay.

The Bees connected on 26-48 (54.2%) shots from the field and went 10-16 (62.5%) from beyond the arc. Conversely, they held William Penn to just 38.6% shooting from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc.

With the win, the Bees (11-17, 6-8) moved up to sixth place in the MCC. They will have their last home game of the season on Saturday when the host the Waldorf Warriors at 3:00 p.m.

First half run buries Bees

(February 9, 2008)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- Despite taking an 18-8 lead through the first five minutes of Saturday's contest with Mount Mercy, the Mustangs outscored the Bees 40-15 the rest of the half and sent the Bees to their 11th straight road loss.

The Bees started off the game red-hot as they buried seven of their first ten shots from the field. Reggie Shipp nailed a three and a pair of lay-ins to spark the run while Adam Fahrenkrog added a pair of jumpers and a two hand dunk to put the Bees up 18-8.

Following Fahrenkrog's flush, the Mustangs scored on five of their next six possessions whie the Bees offense began to struggle. Following a pair of Dillion Allen free throws, the Bees lead shrunk to just three points at 21-18 with 11:24 to go.

With baskets tough to come by, the Bees missed some key opportunities at the line. St. Ambrose went just 3-10 from the free throw line in the first half and missed 13 free throws for the game.

St. Ambrose could not get over the hump in the second half as they could only get the deficit to single digits one time. Adam Fahrenkrog rattled in a lay-up to cut the lead to just eight points, but Mount Mercy responded with a Curtis Kilgore layin and a Steve Smith jumper to put the game back to double digits for good.

Reggie Shipp put up twenty plus points for the second straight game. Shipp finished with 23 points on 7-10 shooting from the field, including a 3-4 performance from beyond the arc. Despite his hot shooting from the field, Shipp cooled down at the free throw stripe and made just six of twelve attempts.

Adam Fahrenkrog had a solid game on the interior by scoring 21 points and grabbing seven boards. Fahrenkrog was 9-11 from the line, but scored just 6-15 from the field.

Jamey Meyer rounded out the Bees double-digit scorers with 11 points. Meyer was 3-5 from the field (2-4 from three) and went 3-4 from the line.

Alex Burkle and Brett Cole, the Bees second and third leading scorers, managed just two points between them. Burkle scored the game's first two points but was shut out the rest of the game. He grabbed four rebounds in 22 minutes of action.

Brett Cole was hampered with foul trouble throughout the game. Cole picked up two fouls in under two minutes of action in the first half. In the second half, he picked up his third foul right away and was not a factor in the game.

Cole, who scored a season-high 29 points in the Bees previous match-up with the Mustangs, went scoreless. He finished with one assist and a steal.

Now sitting at 5-8 in the conference and 10-17 overall, the Bees have just two home games and one road game left to determine seeding for the conference tourney. The Bees will host #6 William Penn (24-3, 12-1) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Bees win in blowout fashion

DAVENPORT, Iowa- The Fighting Bees put together their best offensive performance of the season as they went 15-32 from beyond the arc en route to a 90-59 win over Iowa Wesleyan.

The Bees, which dropped their first meeting of the year with Iowa Wesleyan 86-70, hit 47.2% of their shots from field and made 13 more field goals than the Tigers.

The Bees, which built a comfortable 39-30 lead at the break, saw their lead start to chip away in the second half. Iowa Wesleyan outscored the Bees 7-2 to open the second half and cut the lead to just four points with at 41-37 with 16:29 to go.

Then, the Bees put together an incredible string of baskets and defensive stops. The Bees went on a 32-3 run to blow the game open. The Tigers did not score a field goal for twelve straight minutes as the Bees began to barrage three pointers.

Adam Parrot, the junior guard from Toulon, Illinois, put the game out of reach by hitting three after three. Parrot knocked in four of six triples during the run and added a layup to score 14 of the Bees 32 points.

Parrot finished with a career-high 24 points on 9-10 shooting from the field, including 6-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Parrot's 6-7 performance from three tied Brett Cole's mark for the fifth best three point shooting performance in Bees history.

The Bees were clicking on all cylinders as 13 different players reached the scoring column. Reggie Shipp put in a career-high 20 points on 7-10 shooting from the field. Shipp knocked in 4-7 shots from long range and finished with four rebounds and four steals.

Alex Burkle rounded out the double-digit performers with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Bees shut down the MCC's second leading scorer, Brett Humpal, and limited him to just 11 points. Humpal, who torched the Bees for 27 points and 13 rebounds in their first meeting, was held to just 1 point in the second half.

The win improves the Bees to 10-16 on the season and 5-7 in the MCC. Despite being 5-7, the Bees are just one game out of third place in the conference. They will head to Mount Mercy on Saturday for a 3:00 tip off with the Mustangs.

Bees road skid continues

La Crosse, WI- The Fighting Bees dropped their tenth straight game on the road, including their sixth straight conference road setback, with an 84-73 loss to Viterbo.

For the third game in a row, the Fighting Bees found themselves on the losing side as they continued to give up way too many points. Their opponents are averaging 93.3 points per game in their last three match-ups.

On Saturday, the Viterbo V-Hawks completely dominated the offensive glass en route to victory. The Bees, who usually average 37.5 rebounds per game, hauled in just 25 rebounds. Viterbo secured 37 rebounds, 18 of which were offensive, and had multiple second chance opportunities.

The V-Hawks also made two significant runs to put the Bees in a tough position. Viterbo closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 40-30 advantage at the break. In the second half, with the Bees clawing back down 58-57, Viterbo went on another 11-2 run to put themselves up 69-59 with just 3:48 to go. In the end, Viterbo hit 10 straight free throws to put the game away.

The Fighting Bees had 12 different players play significant minutes, but did not have any one play stand out. Brett Cole led the Bees in scoring with 11 points on 3-7 shooting from the field and 5-6 shooting from the line. Cole, who picked up his second foul early in the first half and his fourth foul with 13:15 to go in the game, played just 17 minutes.

Alex Burkle rounded out the top scorers for St. Ambrose with 10 points. He knocked in 4-10 shots from the field and went 2-5 from the line. he led the Bees with five rebounds.

For the second time this year, Eric Ambrose came up huge against the Bees. Despite averaging just 14 points per game on the season, Ambrose dropped in 23 points in this contest and 29 in their previous match-up. Ambrose finished hitting 6-16 shots from the field and 9-10 from the line. He had a team-high eight rebounds and seven assists as well.

Scott Buschman also had a strong game for Viterbo by finishing with 19 points (8-12 from the field and 3-4 from the line) and seven rebounds.

The loss drops the Bees to 9-16 on the season and 4-7 in the MCC. They will host Iowa Wesleyan College on February 6th, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Lee Lohman Arena.

Fahrenkrog tops 1,000 points in Bees loss

DAVENPORT, IA- Adam Fahrenkrog scored 13 points to become just the 42nd player in the school's history to score 1,000 career points as the Bees lost to Clarke 100-88.

The Fighting Bees could not overcome a couple of Clarke runs that ultimately led to the Bees second consecutive defeat. Trailing 10-9 with with 16:22 to play in the first half, the Crusaders dropped in 11 straight points to build the lead to 12 at 21-9.

Down by double-digits for most of the half, the Bees cut the lead to seven at 35-28 on a Josh Binder jumper. Following a turnover by Brian Harris, the Bees had a chance to cut the lead to just five points, but Adam Fahrenkrog was blocked by Kyle Guldenpfennig and DeMonte Bynum hit a three on the ensuing possession.

Reggie Shipp tried to answer the call, but his three pointer rimmed out and Brian Harris cashed a three to rebuild the Clarke lead to 13 points.

The Bees scored just one point in the last three minutes of the half to Clarke's nine points to trail 44-29 at the break.

In the second half, the Bees got down by as many as 27 points, but Coach Ray's team would not give up. Down 77-50 with 6:49 to play, the Bees switched to a 1-2-2 press and scored a couple easy buckets.

Jamey Meyer scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the final five minutes of the game. During that stretch, Meyer went 5-5 from the field, including 3-3 from beyond the arc and was 2-2 from the free throw line. Meyer finished 7-9 from the field with eight rebounds.

The Bees managed to get as close as ten points with :48 seconds to play, but had to use a barrage of fouls to get back into the game. Clarke was able to convert most of their free throws (35-52) to keep the Bees at bay.

DeMonte Bynum led all scorers with 30 points. He went 6-13 from the field and 3-8 from beyond the arc. Bynum was aided by the Bees fouls at the end by rattling off 15-19 from the line.

The Bees did not get much from two of their top scorers, Brett Cole and Alex Burkle. Cole, who has been fighting influenza, only played 11 minutes and scored two points on 1-3 shooting. Burkle had just four points and five rebounds on 2-10 shooting from the field.

Still winless on the road in the MCC, the Bees will look to change that fact when they head to Viterbo University on Saturday.

Viking sharpshooters sink Bees

(January 26, 2008)

DAVENPORT, IA- The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees fell to Grand View (6-11, 2-6) after the Vikings put together a tremendous shooting performance to defeat the Bees 95-85.

The Vikings shot 56.3% (27-48) from the field, including a blistering 63.2% (12-19) from beyond the arc. When the Bees tried to put Grand View on the line to extend the game, the Vikings made the most of their free throw opportunities as well. Grand View hit 87.9% (29-33) of the fouls shots to put the Bees away.

The Bees were able to stay in the game with hustle plays and offensive rebounds, but ultimately their own shooting woes led to their demise. St. Ambrose shot just 36.4% (28-77) from the field and went 25.9% (7-27) from beyond the arc.

Grand View benefited from the return of Tony Bell and Rohan Greaves. Both Bell and Greaves were ineligible first semester and have given the Vikings an added boost. Tony Bell had 19 points on 4-9 shooting from the field and went 10-10 from the free throw line. Greaves dropped in 16 points on 5-9 shooting from the field, including 4-6 from beyond the arc, and hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Vikings were led by Pat Hoburg and Nate Crawford. Hoburg scored 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the field, including 4-7 from three and 4-4 from the line. He finished with seven rebounds and just two turnovers in 38 minutes of action. Crawford had 21 points on 5-8 shooting from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc. Crawford also went 8-12 from the line.

Matt Bryant paced the Bees with 19 points of the bench. He was 6-13 shooting, including 2-6 from the line, and went 5-7 from the free throw line.

Alex Burkle recorded a double-double with 17 points on 11 rebounds. Burkle scored 17 despite a cold 5-19 shooting performance from the field. Adam Fahrenkrog recorded 15 points and nine rebounds, respectively.

The loss drops the Bees to 4-5 in the MCC and 9-14 overall. They will be have a quick turn around as they head to Clarke College to take on the Crusaders on Monday.

Freshmen play big for Bees

(January 21, 2008)

DAVENPORT, IA- For the first time in Coach Shovlain's coaching career, the Fighting Bees started three freshmen in a varsity game.

"We’ve made a lot of adjustments this year," Coach Shovlain said. "I’m not a guy to wait until summer time and say, ‘Hey, we should have done this.’ It’s the middle of the season, and a lot of coaches would keep doing it the same exact way. I’m not going to do that."

The move paid off for the Bees as they skated to a 79-62 win over Ashford University.

The three freshmen, Kevin Mullen, Reggie Shipp and Jamey Meyer, all had strong performances. Mullen was a steadying influence on offense, dropping in seven points and three assists with no turnovers. Reggie Shipp found his shooting touch and dropped in 16 points on 7-10 shooting from the field, including 2-4 from three.

Jamey Meyer, who scored 32 points in a JV game last Thursday, played his most significant minutes on varsity of the season. Meyer scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting from the field, recorded four rebounds and dished out three assists. After going scoreless in the first half, Meyer scored the Bees first seven points of the second half as the Bees halftime lead grew from six points to 11 in just three minutes.

The three freshmen combined to score 34 of the Bees 79 points.

Senior Adam Fahrenkrog had a game-high 18 points. The Long Grove, IA native scored on 5-6 shots from the field and knocked in 8-10 from the line. He finished with five rebounds and four assists as well.

Matt Bryant came off the bench and gave the Bees an outside shooting presence that they desperately needed. Bryant was 3-4 from the field, including 2-3 from beyond the arc and went 3-4 from the line for 11 points.

The Bees shot a season-high 58.3% (28-48) from the field, including a 42.9% (6-14) effort from beyond the arc. They also won the rebounding battle 33-28 and made 13 more free throws than Ashford.

Ashford, now 12-7, 4-3, shot connected on 26-62 (41.9%) shots from the field and was just 6-21 (28.6%) from three and 4-7 (57.1%) from the line.

The Bees (9-13, 4-4) got a much needed win as they now sit a game out of third place in the MCC They will have a few days off to prepare for Grand View, who comes to town on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip off at Lee Lohman Arena.

Free throws make the difference in Bees loss

FOREST CITY, IA- The Waldorf Warriors knocked in 10 more free throws than the Fighting Bees even attempted as St. Ambrose dropped their fourth consecutive conference road game 86-70.

Although only 56% on the season from the line, the Warriors knocked in 23-29 (79.3%) of their foul shots. The Bees went 10-13 (76.9%) from the stripe and counted 25 personal fouls to Waldorf's 15.

For the second consecutive game, the Fighting Bees got down early and were unable to overcome a large deficit. The Bees did not hit a basket for the first five minutes of the game and fell down early 11-0. SAU then got hot as they rattled off a 13-3 run to pull within one point with 10:09 to play in the first half.

As close as they came to taking a lead in the first half, the Bees never could get over the hump. They trailed the Warriors 37-33 at the break.

While shooting 13-26 (50%) from the field in the first half, the Bees were just 15-38 (39.8%) in the second half while Waldorf went 14-29 from the field and 19-25 from the line. The free throw disparity proved to be the ultimate difference for St. Ambrose.

The Bees committed 24 turnovers and had just 15 assists in the game. While 11different players scored for the Bees, only Adam Fahrenkrog reached double figures. Fahrenkrog finished with 24 points on 10-18 shooting from the field. He went 4-4 from the line and also hauled in 14 rebounds.

Alex Burkle and Brett Cole, the MCC's fifth and eight leading scorers, combined for just nine points in the defeat. Reggie Shipp scored nine points on 4-8 shooting and Adam parrot added eight.

The Bees, who are 6-2 at home and 2-11 away from Lee Lohman Arena, dropped to sixth place in the MCC at 3-4. They will host Ashford (12-6, 4-2), whom the Bees lost to on a buzzer beater in November, on Monday January 21st at 7:30 p.m.

Statesmen pound Bees

(January 16, 2008)

OSKALOOSA, IA- The William Penn Statesmen used intense man-to-man pressure to force the Fighting Bees into their lowest field goal shooting performance of the season (31.1%) as St. Ambrose fell 89-65.

Things seemed optimistic at the start of the game as it was Ambrose that used pressure to their advantage. Alex Burkle and Alex Washington trapped Andre Thompson on the first possession of the game and stole the ball for an easy lay-in. The 2-0 lead would be the Bees only lead of the game as William Penn went on a 21-2 run to blow the game open at 23-4 to start the game.

Thompson and point guard Kris Miller were instrumental during Penn's barrage of baskets. Miller scored 11 points in the first five minutes of the game and Kris Miller had seven points and two assists during the run.

Miller and Thompson went on to hurt the Bees the entire game. Thompson finished with a game-high 32 points on 12-20 shooting from the field. The transfer from Washington State University was 5-10 from three and hit all three free throw attempts.

Miller scored 17 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. He missed a double-double by one rebound with nine and also dished out seven assists to lead the Statesmen.

The Fighting Bees never quite got into rhythm on the offensive end and had a tough time getting into offense. The Bees two leading scorers, Alex Burkle (16.1 ppg) and Brett Cole (15.1 ppg) were held to just 12 and seven points. Burkle scored his 12 points on 5-17 shooting from the field and pulled in six rebounds. Cole, who scored a season-high 29 in his previous game against Mount Mercy, was held to just seven points on 3-13 shooting from the field.

The Bees were led by senior Adam Fahrenkrog with 19 points. Fahrenkrog was 5-13 from the field, but went 9-12 from the free throw line. He also hauled in seven rebounds and had five assists.

St. Ambrose finished with their worst shooting performance of the season while William Penn finished with one of their best (52.9%). William Penn hit 7-22 shots from beyond the arc while the Bees were just 3-20.

The loss drops the Bees to 3-3 in the MCC and and 8-12 overall. The Bees are now 0-3 in MCC road contests. They will have another road challenge on Saturday when they head to Forest City, IA to take on Waldorf College (9-7, 3-2).

Bees defense shuts down Mount Mercy

(January 12, 2008)

DAVENPORT, IA- After giving up an average of 79.3 points per game this season, the Fighting Bees finally put together a strong defensive effort for 40 minutes as they defeated the Mount Mercy Mustangs 72-65 to improve to 3-2 in the MCC.

The Fighting Bees (8-11, 3-2) used a combination of defenses to keep Mount Mercy off-balance. The Bees mixed in a combination of man-to-man, 2-3 zone, and 3-2 zone to thwart the Mustangs offense. The 65 points scored by Mount Mercy was the lowest amount of points the Bees have given up all season.

After starting in man-to-man defense, the Bees got down 11-5 in the game's first three and a half minutes. Mount Mercy scored on five of their first six possessions before Coach Shovlain's Bees switched to a 2-3 zone. Once the Bees made the shift, Mount Mercy scored just 20 points the rest of the half and went 8-29 from the field.

In the second half, Mount Mercy cut the Bees lead to one point following a pair of free throws by Curtis Kilgore with 7:20 left in the game. However, the Bees went on a 9-0 run to put the game away. Dean Ramoino knocked in two free throws, Brett Cole hit back to back jumpers and Adam Fahrenkrog was fouled on a lay-up and put the Bees up 10 points with 3:20 remaining.

The Bees were aided by 44 points off the bench, 29 of which came from senior Brett Cole. Cole hit 9-15 shots from the field, including 5-8 from beyond the arc. Cole went 6-6 from the line and hauled in five rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

Alex Burkle also had a strong game for the Bees. Burkle finished with 17 points on 6-10 shooting from the field. Burkle was 5-5 from the line and had six rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

The Bees are now 3-2 in the MCC and 8-11 overall. They will head to William Penn (17-2, 5-0) to take on the MCC's top team on Wednesday.

Poor shooting sinks Bees

(January 9, 2008)

MT.PLEASANT, IA- The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees shot just 34.8% from the field and hit only nine of 35 attempts from beyond the arc as they fell to Iowa Wesleyan 86-70.

Iowa Wesleyan (7-10, 3-1) utilized a 2-3 defense that completely stymied the Bees offensive attack. Averaging just under 80 points a game scoring, the Bees found themselves with only 30 points to show for in the first half.

Down one with 17 seconds to go in the first half, the Bees held for one shot. As they moved the ball around the zone, Iowa Wesleyan's Brett Humpal stole a Reggie Shipp pass and went in for a lay-up as time expired to push the halftime deficit to three points.

In the second half, the Bees were within four points following a Kevin Mullen three pointer from the left wing at the 15:13 mark. Following Mullen's three pointer, the Fighting Bees only managed two baskets and two free throws over the next eight minutes. During that span, Iowa Wesleyan went on a 22-6 run and grew their lead to 20 points.

St. Ambrose tried to get back into the game by fouling. Iowa Wesleyan gave the Bees a chance when they missed six of their final ten free throws down the stretch, but the Bees could not convert of the Tigers misses.

For the game, Iowa Wesleyan shot 52.7% from the field, hitting 29-55 from the field and 23-34 from the line. The Bees were 13-21 from the line and 24-69 from the field.

Brett Humpal, the MCC's leading scorer, scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half. Humpal hit 8-13 shots, went 2-4 from three, and made 9-13 free throws.

For the Bees, their top three scorers hit right about at their averages as Burkle scored 17, Cole had 15 and Fahrenkrog scored 13.

 Alex Burkle dropped in 17 points on 7-12 shooting. Burkle was 1-2 from three and 2-3 from the line. He also hauled in seven rebounds.

Brett Cole went 4-11 from the field, 3-7 from beyond the arc, and was 4-4 from the line. He just missed a double-double by grabbing nine rebounds.

Fahrenkrog was 5-7 from the field and 3-3 from the line for thirteen points. Matt Bryant added 10 points as well.

Reggie Shipp and Alex Washington had a tough time finding their spots in the zone. Combined they were 2-15 from the field, 3-8 from the line and 0-6 from three.

The loss drops the Bees to 2-2 in the MCC and 7-11 overall. They will host Mount Mercy (8-7, 1-2) on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Bees mount comeback in MCC battle

(January 5, 2008)

Davenport, IA-  The St. Ambrose Fighting Bees overcame an 18-point deficit to put away the Viterbo V-Hawks 83-79 at Lee Lohman Arena.

The Bees went cold from the field in the game's first ten minutes. Trailing 7-9 with 15:37 left in the first half, St. Ambrose did not score a single point for over five minutes. The Bees committed three straight turnovers and went 0-3 from the field during the span. Reggie Shipp finally ended the drought with a lay-up just before the ten-minute mark.

Following Shipp's basket, Cornelius Bardney hit a jumper from the left wing to match Viterbo's biggest lead of the game at 18. Down 27-9, with 9:40 to play in the first half, the Bees went on a furious run to close the half. St. Ambrose outscored the V-Hawks 29-15 to close the half.

Adam Fahrenkrog and Brett Cole accounted for twelve of the Bees points during the run. Each scored 19 for the game.

In the second half, neither team could pull away from the other. With the game tied at 48-48, Alex Burkle scored a lay-up to give St. Ambrose their first lead of the game. A minute later with the Bees up two points, Burkle fired a three from the left corner that gave St. Ambrose their biggest lead of the game.

Viterbo continued to fight back and eventually took a one-point lead off an Eric Ambrose three pointer with three minutes to play.

With the game hanging in the balance, senior Brett Cole took over. He answered Ambrose's bucket with a lay-up on the next possession. Following his score, Cole hauled in a defensive rebound and was fouled. He hit 1-2 from the line to put the Bees up two points.

Ambrose knocked down two more free throws to tie the game, but Brett Cole answered with a lay-in off an Adam Fahrenkrog feed to put the Bees up for good. Following a Viterbo turnover, Cole knocked in two more free throws to give the Bees a four-point advantage and they were able to hang on 83-79.

Cole scored his 19 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and went 4-5 from the line. Adam Fahrenkrog dropped in 19 on 4-8 shooting from the field and hit 11-14 shots from the stripe. Alex Burkle scored 12 points for the Bees and Reggie Shipp added 10.

With the win, the Bees improved to 7-10 on the season and 2-1 in the MCC. They will head to Iowa Wesleyan (6-9, 2-1) on Wednesday.

Fighting Bees survive late scare

(December 7, 2007)

DAVENPORT, IA- Trailing by two points with 12 seconds to play, the Clarke Crusaders had the chance to play the spoiler but missed two open three point shots as time expired. Demarvis Russell and DeMonte had their shots go in-and-out to secure the Bees victory.

Bynum, who burned the Bees for 36 a year ago, was held to just two points in the first half. Clarke, which only scored 22 points in the first half, was completely hampered without Bynum's scoring ability. In the second half, however, Bynum brought his team back by scoring 18 points and delivering five assists in the second half.

Up two points with 14:27 remaining in the first half, St. Ambrose used a 10-0 run to give themselves a cushion. Reggie Shipp, Josh Binder and Brett Cole all scored consecutive lay-ups during the run. The run helped the Bees take a 14 point advantage into the break.

In the second half, Clarke woke up after Bynum's improved play. The Crusaders doubled their first half output by scoring 44 points in the second half.

Despite some defensive lapses in the second half, the Bees played one of their best defensive games of the year. They limited Clarke to just 44.8% from the field and just 3-11 from three.

The Bees 49.1% from the field and out-rebounded the Crusaders 35-29. Down the stretch, Alex Burkle and Josh Binder combined to hit four free throws to secure the Bees victory.

St. Ambrose got another strong performance from their posts and much improved play from their guards. Alex Burkle led the Bees with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Adam Fahrenkrog scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the field and hauled in nine rebounds.

Freshman Reggie Shipp scored 14 points and had three assists. Laffayette Gray had a strong defensive performance and added four points and five assists.

The Bees improved to 5-6 with the win. They will be back in action with a non-conference match-up with Missouri Valley at lee Lohman Arena on December 15th.

Buzzer beater deals Bees first conference loss

(November 13, 2007)

CLINTON, IA- With 16 seconds remaining, freshman guard Laffayette Gray took his man off the dribble and nailed a jump shot from the elbow to put the Bees up 72-71. On the ensuing possession, Gray's man, Josh Pickens, returned the favor by hitting a jumper from the free throw line to seal the Bees fate.

With one minute remaining in the first half, the Bees held a 37-32 advantage and had the ball. Following a Brett Cole missed three pointer, Ashford's Byron Emerson drained a three to cut the lead to two. On the next possession, Emerson stripped Alex Washington and scored a jumper to tie the game at 37 all at the half.

There were eight different lead changes in the second half as neither team could put the other away. Trailing by two with 5:08 to play, Fahrenkrog tied the game at 62-62 with a breakaway dunk. Ashford's Cash Bimm quickly responded with a jumper from the left short corner.

The two teams traded baskets for the final five minutes until Pickens decided the game on the last possession.

The Bees shot 45.6% from the field and connected, hitting 31-68 shots from the field. The Bees turned the ball over 20 times and hit just 6-22 from beyond the arc.

Brett Cole led the Bees with 21 points on 9-18 shooting with eight rebounds. Alex Burkle had 19 points on 8-12 shooting with three boards. Adam Fahrenkrog and Reggie Shipp each chipped in with eight points.

With the loss the Bees drop to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in the MCC. They will be back in action when they head to Marshall, Missouri to take on Missouri Valley on November 17th.
