Staudt Earns Herman Sani Scholarship

St. Ambrose incoming freshman Luke Staudt, of Marble Rock, Iowa, was one of four recipients of 2011 Herman Sani Scholarship Awards recently presented by the Iowa Golf Association (IGA). Luke, the son of Dennis and Patty Staudt, will receive a prestigious four-year, $2000 per year scholarship.

Staudt will join the Fighting Bees golf team after a successful career at Rockford Senior High School.

The award is named after Herman Sani, the first director of the IGA who served the organization for more than 30 years. The scholarship is given to up to four outstanding Iowa high school students each year.

According to the Iowa Golf Association website, 150 Iowa high school graduates have received Sani Scholarships since they were first awarded in 1958.

Late Birdie Run Leads Gillen to QC Amateur Tour Event Win

Ben Gillen (pictured, right) will enter his senior season at St. Ambrose in a few weeks with a Quad City Amateur tour event title in his bag. Gillen used a run of birdies to earn victory at the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club on July 31.

Gillen found himself three shots out of the lead after 12 holes in the second round before posting birdies at 13, 14, 15 and 17 to force a sudden-death playoff with Steve Schwabe. It took only one hole for Gillen to get the win with a par on the par-4 first hole.

After an opening-round 72, Gillen fired a 68 en route to the tournament win.

Two of Gillen's former SAU teammates, Dusty Drenth and Ryan Sergeant, had rounds of 73-70 to share third place, three shots behind Gillen.

Berkmeyer Wins Missouri State Amateur

Former St. Ambrose All-American Skip Berkmeyer added to his list of accomplishments by recently winning the 104th Missouri State Amateur.

Berkmeyer claimed a 3 and 2 victory over Justin Bryant, who will be a senior at Wake Forest this fall, in the 36-hole final at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta. It was his third state championship after also claiming titles in 1999 and 2009.

After tying for 14th in stroke play, Berkmeyer started match play with a 1 up win and then needed 19 holes to win 1 up to reach the round of 16. There, he won 6 and 5 before winning 3 and 2 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, he rolled to a 7 and 5 win.

Berkmeyer, a 1996 graduate of St. Ambrose, finished 13th at the 1994 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at the Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club to earn All-American honors for the Bees that year.

Skahill Named to PING North Region Team

Senior Matt Skahill, from Bettendorf, Iowa, was recently named to the PING All-North Region Team as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). He was one of 15 players named to the North Region Team.

Skahill (pictured, right) had an outstanding season for St. Ambrose, leading the Bees with a 74.39 stroke average over 27 rounds. He had four top-10 finishes, including three in the spring portion of the schedule.

Skahill's top finish was a third-place showing at the Augustana Invitational before following that up with a fourth-place finish at the NAIA Classic. He took 10th at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships and was 31st at the NAIA National Championships. He led the Bees to 12th place at the National Tournament.

Bees Finish 12th at NAIA National Championships

Thanks to a great third round, St. Ambrose finished 12th at the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships. SAU hosted the event for the third straight year at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

The Bees shot a third-round 289, the second-best round of the day, to make the 17-team cut and closed with a 308 to finish in 12th place. The Bees had rounds of 305-305-289-308 for a 1207 total. Oklahoma Christian won the event with an 1150 (281-293-283-293).

Matt Skahill (pictured right) was the top SAU individual, finishing in 31st place with a 300 (74-73-74-79). Ryan Sergeant (77-77-72-79) and Travis England (82-83-67-73) both shot 305s. England's third-round four-under-par 67 tied for the low round of the tournament.

Ben Gillen started strong and finished with a 311 (72-80-81-78) and Jake Schertz had a 314 (85-75-76-78).

Weather was the story the first two days of the tournament. Thunderstorms shortened play and forced the players to complete 27 holes Thursday. Friday's round was the only round played as scheduled.

Skahill Earns All-Conference Honors

Senior Matt Skahill, from Bettendorf, Iowa, was named to the All-Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golf Team. Teammates Travis England and Jake Schertz earned all-conference honorable mention.

Skahill (pictured right) has led St. Ambrose with a 75.87 stroke average through 24 rounds this year.

He has had four top-10 finishes, including a third-place showing at the Augustana Invitational. Skahill also took fourth at the NAIA Classic and seventh at the Bishops Buffet Invitational before placing 10th at the MCC Championships.

Skahill has fired a pair of 71s this year.

England, a junior from Moline, Ill., is averaging a 76.85 through 24 rounds this year.

He matched Skahill with four top-10 finishes, placing as high as second at the Green Bay Invitational. England (left) also took fourth at the Ronnie Eastman Invitational, eighth at the NAIA Preview Invitational and 10th at the Mobile Fall Invitational.

England shot a season-best 67 this week at the Third Round of the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships.

Schertz (right), a junior from Byron, Ill., is averaging a 77.53 through 24 rounds. 

He also has four top-10 finishes this year, including a second-place effort at the NAIA Preview Invitational. Schertz also took third at the Ronnie Eastman Invitational, sixth at the Augustana Invitational and eighth at the MCC Championships.

Schertz carded a 71 in the final round as part of his second-place finish at the NAIA Preview Invite.

All three Bees are currently competing at the NAIA National Championships, hosted by SAU at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. The national tournament wraps up Friday.

2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship Underway

The 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship teed off Tuesday morning at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. St. Ambrose is hosting the event for the third straight year. The four-day tournament continues through Friday.

Friday update:
Final round play got underway at 7:30 a.m. Visit the Live scoring for results.

Thursday update:
After getting 27 holes in, the tournament will finally be back on schedule Friday. The field was cut to the top 17 teams and any other individuals inside the top 40 for the final round. Friday's round begins at 7:30 a.m.

Wednesday afternoon update:
Play has been suspended due to rain/thunderstorms almost midway through the second round. The round will be completed Thursday.

Wednesday morning update:
The weather cleared and St. Ambrose finished its first round. Led by Ben Gillen, SAU is in 17th place. Gillen fired a one-over-par 72 and is in a tie for 18th place. Matt Skahill shot a 74, Ryan Sergeant recorded a 77, Travis England had an 82 and Jake Schertz shot an 85. As a team, the Bees are 17th with a 305.

The second round will tee off at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon.

Tuesday update:
The first round of the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship was suspended due to thunderstorms with the last group on the 16th hole. The round will be completed starting at 6 a.m. Wednesday with a full second round to immediately follow.

Bees Host Clinic with QC Chapter of First Tee Program

The St. Ambrose University men's golf team hosted a clinic on Thursday, May 19, with the Quad City Chapter of the First Tee Program at Red Hawk Golf Course in Davenport. The clinic was sponsored as part of the NAIA Champions of Character Initiative. First Tee participants, local PGA professionals and the St. Ambrose golfers enjoyed a great afternoon of instruction and fun.

 

SAU Ranked #17 in Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Poll

St. Ambrose is #17 in the final Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Poll of the spring season. The rankings released today will also appear in the May 23 issue of Golf World. The Bees are ranked #23 in the NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

SAU is one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference teams in the rankings. Grand View is #5 and Viterbo is #23.

After winning the Sooner Athletic Conference title over previous #1 Oklahoma Christian, Oklahoma City took the top spot in the poll, earning six of the eight first-place votes. Oklahoma Christian received the other two first-place votes and is second followed by South Carolina-Beaufort and the University of the Cumberlands.

St. Ambrose will host the top teams in the country at the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., May 24-27.

2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championship Qualifiers Announced

St. Ambrose will be one of 29 teams competing for a national title as the qualifiers for the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships were announced by the NAIA today.

As the host school, the Bees received an automatic berth into the four-day tournament beginning Tuesday, May 24, at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Along with the 29 teams, 11 individuals earned a spot in the 156-player championship field. Defending national champion Oklahoma City and reigning individual national champion Justin Lower of Malone both return to defend their titles.

Pairings will be announced sometime Friday.

Bees Ranked #23 Entering NAIA National Championships

St. Ambrose will enter the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships as the #23 team in the country. The NAIA released its final edition of the Men's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll and the Bees are #23, down a spot from the last poll.

SAU remains one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference schools in the rankings. Grand View is #5 and Viterbo is #25. Both St. Ambrose and Grand View will compete as teams at the NAIA National Championships beginning May 23 while Viterbo will send an individual golfer.

Oklahoma City takes over the top spot in the poll after receiving 16 of the 17 first-place votes. Oklahoma Christian is #2, South Carolina-Beaufort is #3 and Cumberlands is #4.

The 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships will be hosted by St. Ambrose May 24-27 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Sergeant, Skahill Receive Fourth-Year Awards

Ryan Sergeant and Matt Skahill were two of four men's golfers to receive their fourth-year awards from St. Ambrose University. The pair received their awards at the annual Spring Sports Banquet held Saturday, May 7, in the Rogalski Center Ballroom.

St. Ambrose Takes Second at MCC Championships

St. Ambrose had two top-10 finishers and all five golfers ended up in the top 15 as the Bees took second at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golf Championships played at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside, Iowa. The three-round tournament was shortened to 45 holes due to the weather.

Jake Schertz (pictured right) was the top Bee, finishing in a tie for eighth with a 197. He opened with an 81 and shot a 37 as the teams played 27 holes Friday. Saturday, Schertz ended with a 79. He was joined in the top 10 by Matt Skahill, who finished just a shot behind his teammate with a 198 (77-37-84).

The other three SAU golfers finished within two shots of each other. Travis England was 12th with a 202 (80-42-80), Ben Gillen was 13th with a 203 (81-44-78) and Ryan Sergeant was 14th with a 204 (82-43-79).

As a team, St. Ambrose took second with a 794 (319-159-316), narrowly edging Viterbo's 795 (317-161-317). Grand View won the nine-team event with a 758 (307-151-300). Derrick Meier of Viterbo was the individual medalist with a 187 (75-37-75).

After competing in the Clarke Spring Invitational at Eagle Ridge South Golf Course in Galena, Ill., on April 19, the Bees will host the NAIA National Championships at TPC @ Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., from May 24-27.

St. Ambrose held steady at #22 in the recent NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll announced today. The Bees remain one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference schools in the rankings. Grand View is #5 and Viterbo is #25.

SAU is coming off a sixth-place showing at the NAIA Classic in Indianapolis, Ind., and currently competing in the MCC Championships in Riverside, Iowa.

Oklahoma Christian received all 20 first-place votes to sit atop the poll. The Eagles are followed by Oklahoma City, South Carolina-Beaufort, Cumberlands (Ky.) and Grand View.

The final regular-season Coaches' Top 25 poll and the 156 individual National Championships qualifiers will be officially announced on May 12. The 2011 NAIA Men's Golf National Championships will be hosted by St. Ambrose May 24-27 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.

Bees Finish in Tie for Sixth at NAIA Classic

Matt Skahill (pictured right) continued his strong play by finishing in a tie for fourth place individually to help St. Ambrose share sixth place at the NAIA Classic.

Skahill carded a second-day 73 at the Brickyard Crossing in Indianapolis, Ind., to jump into a tie for fourth with a two-day, 5-over-par 149. He finished just a shot out of second place and just four shots behind the individual medalist, Justin Lower of Malone.

Jake Schertz opened with a 75 and followed with a 78 to finish 16th overall with a 153. Travis England was 27th with a 155 (75-80).

As a team, St. Ambrose tied Lee for sixth place with a 619. The Bees had a first-round 306 and had a 313 on the second day.

Johnson & Wales won the 14-team event with a 602 (296-306).

The Bees will next compete in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships April 15-16 at Blue Top Ridge Golf Club in Riverside, Iowa.

Skahill Named MCC Men's Golfer of the Week

Senior Matt Skahill (pictured right) was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golfer of the Week after his third-place showing at the Augustana Invitational.

After opening the two-day tournament with a 74, Skahill made his move on the tournament's second day. He fired a 71, the best round of the day, to finish with a 145 and third place, just two shots behind the individual medalist.

He helped St. Ambrose finish second out of 18 teams with a 597 (298-299).

Through 19 rounds this year, Skahill has a 75.58 average. He has two top-10 finishes.

Skahill and the Bees are currently competing at the NAIA Classic at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind., April 11-12.

Skahill Takes Third at Augustana Invitational

Matt Skahill (pictured right) closed with a 71, the best round of the day, to finish with a two-day total of 145 to take third at the Augustana Invitational. He helped St. Ambrose finish second overall.

Skahill started the tournament with a 74 but followed with his 71 to finish third, just two shots behind the individual medalist.

He was one of three Bees to finish in the top 10. Jake Schertz shot a 74-75 to finish sixth with a 149 and Ben Gillen had rounds of 74-77 to take 10th with a 151. Ryan Sergeant (78-76=154) and Travis England (76-92=158) also played for SAU.

The Bees finished second in the 18-team tournament with a 597 (298-299), ahead of third-place Monmouth (616) by 19 shots. Illinois Wesleyan won the event with a 580 (285-295).

Playing as individuals, Alex Larson (74-78=152) and Josh Kunde (78-75=153) each finished in the top 20.

St. Ambrose will next play at the NAIA Classic at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind., April 11-12.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The next poll will be announced on April 15.

Bees Open Spring Schedule with 11th-Place at WIU

Matt Skahill (pictured right) shot rounds of 74 and 76 to finish in 14th place with a two-round 150 at the Beu/Mussatto Invitational hosted by Western Illinois University. He helped the Bees finish 11th in the 16-team tournament.

Ryan Sergeant was 35th after rounds of 78 and 77 for a 155 total. Travis England shot a 78 and an 82 for a 160 total, good for 52nd overall. Ben Gillen (83-85=168) and Jake Schertz (79-93=172) also competed for the Bees. After a first-round 309, St. Ambrose shot a second-round 320 to finish 11th with a 629.

Western Illinois, led by individual medalist Andrew Godfrey's 143 (69-74), was the top team with a 593 (294-299). South Dakota State was second with a 596 (299-297).

Playing as an individual, SAU's Brent Anderson had rounds of 95 and 93 for a 188 total.

SAU will next compete in the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Ill., April 8-9.

Andrew Canfield Signs to Golf at St. Ambrose

St. Ambrose University Men’s Golf Coach Jeff Griebel is excited to announce the signing of one of the top junior college golfers from Northern Illinois.

Andrew Canfield, currently a sophomore at Rock Valley College (Ill.) has signed a letter of intent and will transfer to St. Ambrose in the fall 2011. Canfield will have two years of athletic eligibility remaining at St. Ambrose. He is a 2009 graduate of Oregon High School (Ill.).

In high school, Canfield was named his team’s most valuable player as a junior and senior. He was medalist in two high school tournaments and won the prestigious Lincoln Highway Tournament in 2010.

Canfield finished in 17th place individually at the 2010 Junior College (NJCAA) Division III national tournament. He will finish his career at Rock Valley this spring by competing in the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III National Tournament.

"We are very pleased to have a player the caliber of Andrew Canfield joining our golf program next season," said Coach Griebel. "He is transferring from a great NJCAA Division III program at Rock Valley College and will bring experience and confidence to our team next fall."

Canfield will be joining a St. Ambrose golf team that has qualified for the NAIA National Golf Tournament 18 of the last 20 years. St. Ambrose had a school-record third-place team finish at the 2004 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship and finished in fourth in 2006. They are currently ranked 16th in the 2011 NAIA Men’s Golf National Poll and will host this year’s NAIA Men’s Golf National Tournament at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., May 24-27, 2011.

St. Ambrose Signs John Walsh

St. Ambrose University Men’s Golf Coach Jeff Griebel is excited to announce the signing of one of the top high school golfers from the Chicago area.

John Walsh, a senior at Neuqua Valley High School (Illinois) has signed a letter of intent and will attend St. Ambrose in the fall 2011. 

John is the son of Daniel & Susan Walsh of Naperville, Ill.

Walsh was named Upstate 8 Boys Golf First Team All-Conference his senior year. He was voted team captain and most valuable player on the 2010 Neuqua Valley boys’ golf team. Walsh qualified for the IHSA Boys Golf State Tournament his senior year. He was the Bolingbrook Golf Club Champion and Vern McGonagle Naperville City Golf Champion in 2010.

Walsh posted a 75 stroke average in competitive matches and was medalist 18 times his senior year. He currently holds nine individual high school golf records at Neuqua Valley, including most pars, birdies, greens in regulation, low 9-hole match score (32) and low 18-hole score in national competition (68). 

"John Walsh is a very dedicated and experienced player," St. Ambrose Coach Jeff Griebel said. "John will be an impact player during his college career at St. Ambrose."

Walsh will be joining a St. Ambrose golf team that has qualified for the NAIA National Golf Tournament 18 of the last 20 years. St. Ambrose had a school record third-place team finish at the 2004 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship and finished fourth in 2006. St. Ambrose #16 in First Coaches' Poll of Spring

In the first Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Poll of the spring season, St. Ambrose is ranked #16 in the country. The poll released today will also appear in the February 28, 2011 issue of Golf World. SAU is also #16 in the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll, which came out in November.

The Bees jumped up a spot from their #17 ranking in the final poll of the fall season. SAU is one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference teams in the rankings. Grand View is #4 and Viterbo is #19.

Oklahoma City received all 10 first-place votes to remain atop the poll. Oklahoma Christian is #2, slightly ahead of USC-Beaufort. Malone follows Grand View to round out the top five.

St. Ambrose will begin its spring season with its Spring Trip March 12-19 in Palm Springs, Calif. The first competition will be the Beu/Mussatto Western Illinois University Invitational March 28-29 in Macomb, Ill.

Staudt Commits to Golf at St. Ambrose

St. Ambrose University Men’s Golf Coach Jeff Griebel is excited to announce the signing of one of the top high school golfers from state of Iowa.

Luke Staudt, a senior at Rockford Senior High School (Iowa) has signed a letter of intent and will attend St. Ambrose in the fall 2011.

Luke is the son of Dennis and Patty Staudt of Marble Rock, Iowa.

Staudt was named Corn Bowl Conference (CBC) First Team Boys Golf All-Conference as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He was the conference medalist his sophomore and junior years and was sectional medalist as a junior. Staudt was named to the Iowa High School Athletic Association All-State Boys Golf Second Team in 2009-2010.

Staudt has 14 medalist wins through his junior season at Rockford High School. His competitive 9-hole stroke average last season was 38.2.

"We are very excited that Luke Staudt has committed to attend St. Ambrose University and be a member of our men’s golf program," said St. Ambrose Coach Jeff Griebel. "Luke is one of the top high school golfers in Iowa and will be an impact player for our golf program at St. Ambrose University next year."

Justin Gestout Signs to Golf at St. Ambrose

St. Ambrose University Men's Golf Coach Jeff Griebel is excited to announce the signing of one of the top high school golfers from the North-Central Wisconsin area.

Justin Gestout, a senior at Appleton West High School (Wis.) has signed a letter of intent and will attend St. Ambrose in the fall 2011.

Justin is the son of Leonard and Mary Gestout of Appleton.

Gestout was named Fox Valley Association (FVA) Boys Golf First Team All-Conference his junior season, finishing fifth place individually in the conference tournament. He was named the Appleton West High School boys golf Most Valuable Player his junior year and was named to the 2010 Appleton Post-Crescent Boys Golf All Area Team.

Gestout was medalist in the 2010 Appleton City Junior Amateur Championship and finished second in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Junior Championship. He also was medalist in the Appleton Post-Crescent Junior Tournament in July 2010.

"We are very excited that Justin Gestout has committed to attend St. Ambrose University and be a member of our men’s golf program," said St. Ambrose Coach Jeff Griebel. "Justin is one of the top high school and junior golfers in north-central Wisconsin and is a great addition to our golf program at St. Ambrose University."

St. Ambrose University Men’s Golf Coach Jeff Griebel is excited to announce the signing of one of the top high school golfers from the Chicago area.

Bryan Contey, a senior at Lincoln Way East High School (Ill.), has signed a letter of intent and will attend St. Ambrose in the fall 2011.

Bryan is the son of Mark and Patricia Contey of Mokena, Ill.

Contey was named Southwest Suburban Conference (SWSC) Boys Golf First Team All-Conference both his junior and senior seasons. He placed third at sectionals and seventh at regionals his senior year and qualified as an individual for the Illinois High School Class 3A State Tournament. He was medalist at the Southwest Junior Open Championship in 2009.

Contey posted a 76 stroke average in competitive matches his senior season and was named co-captain of his high school team.

“Bryan Contey is a very dedicated and experienced player,” said St. Ambrose Coach Jeff Griebel. “He will continue to improve and be an impact player during his college career at St. Ambrose.”

Contey will be joining a St. Ambrose golf team that has qualified for the NAIA National Golf Tournament 18 of the last 20 years. St. Ambrose had a school record third-place team finish at the 2004 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship and finished fourth in 2006. They are currently ranked 16th in the NAIA Men’s Golf National Poll and will host this year's NAIA Men’s Golf National Tournament at the TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., May 24-27, 2011.

Bees Ranked #16 in Preseason Top 25 Poll

After a successful fall season, St. Ambrose is ranked #16 in the 2011 NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll, the NAIA announced today.

Defending national champion Oklahoma City received 17 of the possible 20 first-place votes to earn the top spot in the preseason poll. South Carolina-Beaufort picked up the other three first-place votes and is second in the poll. Oklahoma Christian, Grand View and The Master's (Calif.) round out the top five.

SAU received 296 points in the poll to sit at #16, one spot ahead of Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Viterbo, giving the MCC three schools (Grand View) in the poll.

The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences, independents and unaffiliated groups. The first regular season Top 25 poll will be announced on March 18, 2011.

St. Ambrose has climbed to #17 in the final Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Poll of the fall season released today that will also appear in the Nov. 22 issue of Golf World.

The Bees were #19 in the last poll but jumped two spots after their eighth-place showing at the University of Mobile (Ala.) Fall Invitational two weeks ago. SAU is one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference teams in the rankings. Grand View is #4 and Viterbo is #20.

Oklahoma City remained in the top spot with 11 of the 12 first-place votes. The last time the Stars were not the top-ranked team in the country came in October 2009. USC-Beaufort and Oklahoma Christian are #2 and #3 in the poll, respectively.

England Named MCC Golfer of the Week

Junior Travis England (pictured, right) was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Golfer of the Week on Nov. 8 after his top-10 finish at the University of Mobile (Ala.) Fall Invitational.

England shot an even-par 72 after a first-round 78 to finish 10th overall with a two-round 150 at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala. He helped the Bees finish eighth in the 12-team tournament that wrapped up the fall schedule for SAU.

England averaged a 75.40 over 15 fall rounds.

SAU Wraps Up Fall Season at Mobile Invitational

St. Ambrose concluded the fall portion of its schedule with an eighth-place showing at the University of Mobile Fall Invitational.

Travis England (pictured, right) led the way with a 10th-place finish at the two-day tournament played at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala. After an opening round 78, he fired a 72 to finish with a 150. Matt Skahill was just a shot back after rounds of 76 and 75 for a 151 to take 14th place.

Ryan Sergeant (78-80=158), Ben Gillen (85-75=160) and Jake Schertz (82-85=167) also competed for SAU.

The Bees took eighth in the 12-team tournament with a 616. SAU had a much better second round, shooting 302 as a team after starting with a 314. Shorter won the event with a 600.

Bees Move Up to #19 in Golf World Coaches' Poll

St. Ambrose moved up five spots to #19 in the recent Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Poll. The Bees received 85 points in the poll released today that will also appear in the November 1 issue of Golf World.

After checking in at #24 last month, the St. Ambrose golf team had two strong tournament appearances in October. The Bees won the Ronnie Eastman Invitational early in the month and took second at the NAIA Preview Invitational the team hosted at TPC Deere Run Oct. 14-15. The NAIA Preview Invite featured several ranked teams.

St. Ambrose is one of three Midwest Collegiate Conference teams in the rankings. Grand View jumped from #11 to #5 and Viterbo is at #25.

Oklahoma City received nine of the 11 first-place votes to stay atop the poll. USC-Beaufort, Oklahoma Christian, Malone and Grand View round out the top five.

The Bees have one remaining event this fall - the University of Mobile Fall Classic in Mobile, Ala., Oct. 31-Nov. 2. In the spring of 2011, St. Ambrose will host the NAIA Men's Golf National Championships at TPC Deere Run for the third straight year. The national championship will be May 24-27.

St. Ambrose Finishes Second at NAIA Preview Invite

In a strong showing by the Midwest Collegiate Conference, St. Ambrose finished second at the NAIA Preview Invitational held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., Thursday and Friday. The Bees finished just one shot behind fellow conference member Grand View and four shots ahead of MCC school and third-place Viterbo in the 18-team tournament.

The three conference schools jumped to the top of the leader board in the first round. SAU and Viterbo shared the top spot with 293s with Grand View just two strokes back with a 295. They were the only three schools to break 300 Thursday.

But Friday, the Vikings put together a round of 291 to finish with a 586 and the team championship. SAU's 294 left the Bees with a 587 and second place.

Jake Schertz led St. Ambrose with a 3-over-par 145. He opened with a 74 before firing an even-par 71 Friday. Brent Anderson (pictured, right), a last-minute addition to the team, put together back-to-back rounds of 73 to finish fifth overall with a 146. After starting with a 78, Travis England posted a 2-under 69 Saturday to sit in eighth place with a 147.

Matt Skahill began with an even-par 71 and followed with an 81 to finish 24th with a 152. Ryan Sergeant shot 75-82 for a 157.

Connor Gillund led a second St. Ambrose team with a 151 (73-78). The SAU White team finished 16th with a 319-321=640.

St. Ambrose will close out the fall portion of its schedule by competing in the University of Mobile Fall Classic at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, Ala., Oct. 31-Nov. 2.

Bees to Host NAIA Men's Golf Preview invitational

St. Ambrose University will host an NAIA Men’s Golf Preview Tournament at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., Thursday and Friday, Oct. 14-15. The 17-team field will feature eight programs currently ranked in the Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Poll and six other programs receiving votes in the poll.

The tournament serves as a “first look” at the TPC Deere Run course for many of the teams in preparation for the 2011 Men’s Golf National Championships which will be hosted by SAU May 24-27.

Play begins at 9 a.m. Thursday with St. Ambrose, Texas Wesleyan and Grand View teeing off at hole #1, and Spring Hill, William Woods and Marian starting at #10. A second St. Ambrose team will begin at 9:45 a.m.

Schertz, England, Gillen Lead Bees to Ronnie Eastman Win

Jake Schertz finished third, Travis England took fourth and Ben Gillen was seventh to lead St. Ambrose to a three-shot win at the Ronnie Eastman Invitational.

Schertz (pictured, right) opened with a 74 Sunday and followed with a 72 Monday for a 146 total, good for third place and just two shots behind the individual medalist.

England finished a stroke behind his teammate with a 147 after rounds of 73 and 74. Gillen had a first-round 72 before finishing with a 77 to take seventh with a 149.

The trio led St. Ambrose to a 591 (296-295) and a three-shot win in the 13-team tournament played at the La Cross Country Club in Onalaska, Wis. Grand View finished second with a 594 (302-292).

Matt Skahill (80-73) and Ryan Sergeant (77-76)  finished with 153s to tie for 16th overall for the Bees.

Playing as individuals, Brent Anderson, Luke Johnson and Connor Gillund each finished in the top 25. Anderson put together consecutive rounds of 77 to take 19th with a 154 total. Johnson (77-79) and Gillund (79-77) shared 24th with 156s.

After a strong start this fall, the St. Ambrose men's golf team has cracked the Golf World/Nike Golf NAIA Coaches' Top-25 Poll. The Bees received 34 points to sit 24th in the poll released today that will also appear in the October 4 issue of Golf World.

Oklahoma City, the defending NAIA National Champion, received 12 of the 13 first-place votes to sit atop the poll. Oklahoma Christian is second while Malone, S.C.-Beaufort and Savannah College of Art & Design round out the top five.

St. Ambrose has finished in the top five of all four events this fall. The Bees won the UW-Green Bay Invitational, a 10-team tournament consisting of primarily NCAA Division I programs.

SAU will compete in the Ronnie Eastman Invitational at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis., Oct. 3-4, before hosting the NAIA Preview Invitational at TPC Deere Run Oct. 14-15. The 17-team Preview Invite will feature eight programs currently ranked in the top 25.

Skahill Takes Seventh as Bees Place Fourth

Matt Skahill (pictured, right) finished with a two-round 151 to place seventh individually at the University of Dubuque Bishops Buffet Invitational. He opened with a 76 Saturday before firing a 75 Sunday at Eagle Ridge Golf Course in Galena, Ill.

Skahill's performance helped St. Ambrose take fourth place in the 28-team tournament. The Bees shot 306-309 for a 615 total. Indian Hills CC won the event with a 597.

Ben Gillen bounced back after a first-round 81 to post a 72, the best round for a Bee at the tournament. His 153 was good for 14th place.

Jake Schertz carded a 73 before following with an 84 to finish 26th with a 157. Ryan Sergeant had back-to-back rounds of 79 to sit in 32nd place with a 158. Travis England shot 78-83 for a 161 and 50th place.

The Bees will next compete in the Ronnie Eastman Invitational at the La Crosse Country Club in Onalaska, Wis., Oct. 3-4.

SAU Finishes Fourth, Fifth at Grand View Viking Classic

Five golfers finished in the top-20 as two St. Ambrose teams finished fourth and fifth at the Grand View Viking Classic Monday.

Jake Schertz, Ben Gillen and Travis England helped the Blue team tie for fifth with a 594 (300-294). Schertz (pictured, right) fired back-to-back rounds of 73 to finish with a 146 and 15th place overall. Gillen finished with a 147 (75-72) to take 16th and England finished 20th with a 148 (74-74).

Matt Skahill shot a 153 (78-75) and Ryan Sergeant had a 157 (81-76) for the Bees.

But the Blue team was outdone by the White team by a single shot.

Luke Johnson and Brent Anderson led the White team to a 593 (294-299) with top-20 finishes. Johnson fired a 147 (73-74) and Anderson carded a 148 (74-74) to place 16th and 20th, respectively. Connor Gillund was just a shot back with a 149 (75-74). Josh Kunde (74-77=151) and Alex Larson (73-80=153) also played for the White team.

Grand View won its own invitational at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa, with a 562.

The Bees will next compete in the Dubuque Bishops Buffet Invitational in Galena, Ill., Sept. 25-26.

Through two tournaments this fall, England is averaging a 75.6 over five rounds.

Bees Win Green Bay Invitational

Travis England (pictured, right) may have lost individual medalist honors in a playoff, but he did enough to help lead St. Ambrose to the team championship at the Green Bay Invitational Tuesday.

In a field featuring several NCAA Division I teams, St. Ambrose led much of the way, finishing with a three-round total 888. The Bees got better each round, starting with a 303 Monday morning, posting a 293 Monday afternoon, and closing with a 292 Tuesday morning at the Green Bay Country Club.

SAU won the 10-team tournament by 12 shots. Lewis finished second with a 900 (304-298-298) and Loyola-Chicago was third with a 902 (299-309-294).

England carded an opening-round 72 before back-to-back rounds of 74 to finish in a three-way tie for first with a 220. He eventually lost a playoff to settle for second place.

England was one of three Bees to finish in the top 10. Ben Gillen fired a final round 71 to finish in a tie for fifth with a 223 (79-73-71). After sitting atop the leaderboard after rounds of 73 and 72 on Monday, Ryan Sergeant landed in eighth place after his final round 79 to finish with a 224.

Matt Skahill was 14th with a 227 (79-74-74) and Jake Schertz was 33rd with a 236 (79-84-73).

St. Ambrose will next compete at the Grand View Viking Classic Sept. 19-20 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny, Iowa.

Gillen Leads Bees to Second-Place Finish

Ben Gillen finished second overall as St. Ambrose opened the fall portion of its schedule with a second-place finish at the Robert Morris Fall Classic at Shepherds Crook Golf Course in Zion, Ill.

Gillen shot an opening-round 74 Friday and followed that with a 76 Saturday for a two-round 150. He finished four shots behind individual medalist Donnie Langland of Carthage.

After a first round 81, Matt Skahill fired a 73 Saturday, the best round of the day, to finish in a tie for 12th with a 154. He matched Jake Schertz's effort. Schertz put together rounds of 76 and 78 for his 154.

Ryan Sergeant (78-78=156) finished 17th overall and Travis England (78-80=158) was 21st.

St. Ambrose finished seven shots behind Carthage. The Bees were consistent, shooting rounds of 306 and 305 to finish at 611. Carthage won the event with a 604 (297-307). UW-Parkside finished third with a 618 (309-309).

SAU will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to compete in the three-round UW-Green Bay Invitational starting with 36 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday.
