Reasons to Study Foreign Languages

Mérida, Yucatán, México

Mérida is a city near and dear to the heart of Professor Fox (Spanish). As a teenager, she finished high school in Mérida and, in the process, became fluent in the language, immersed in the culture, and developed extraordinary friendships and “family” relationships that she still maintains to this day.  Living in the Yucatán also afforded her the opportunity to visit some of the most amazing sites on earth, from Pre-Columbian ruins (pyramids!) and contemporary Mayan villages, to beautiful, white beaches.  Since her teens, Dr. Fox has returned to Mérida and the surrounding areas many times on personal visits and as a college study abroad leader. If any of this intrigues you, stop into Dr. Fox’s office (120A McMullen Hall) to chat with her some time—it’s one of her favorite subjects. J

Population: Approximately 750,000.

Industry:  Agriculture, food industry, tourism (Mayan ruins), service industry

Location:  Mérida’s location is in the Yucatán peninsula, approximately 30 minutes (22 miles) south of the Gulf of México (to the North) and 4 hours west of the Caribbean Sea.

Climate:  Mérida enjoys a tropical climate, with quite hot summers (up to 100 degrees F) and temperatures in the 80s and 90s the remainder of the year.  The rainy season is from June to October.

City description: A large, but safe and beautiful city, Mérida boasts colonial era architecture in the historic center, beautiful 19th century homes and other buildings on the main avenue (Paseo Montejo), and newer areas with modern amenities.
