Scholarships in Modern Languages
Study Abroad Scholarship in Languages
To
encourage students to study abroad, the Department of
Languages and International Studies has scholarship money
available. The award process is competitive and students are
expected to adhere to the following guidelines:
-
Full-time student status and in good
standing at St. Ambrose University
-
Pursue a major or minor in Spanish,
German or French
-
3.0 overall grade point average in all
college work
-
Acceptance into an approved St. Ambrose University study abroad program lasting a minimum of one semester.
-
Positive letters of recommendation from
three St. Ambrose faculty members (these letters should
be addressed to
Department Chair, Languages and
International Studies)
-
An essay stating why the student wants to
study abroad, the benefits the student hopes to derive
from the experience, and finally how the experience will
shape or influence the student's career. An explanation
of financial need (how the money will be used) should be
included.
A committee of four full-time faculty
members, two from languages, one of whom will be the chair
of the committee, and two from other departments, will
process the applications and make decisions concerning
awards.
The essay and three letters of recommendation
should all be placed in a sealed envelope. This envelope
should then be submitted to the Languages and International Studies Department Chair, who will then give it
to a committee of faculty to make a decision.
Students who
have already received a departmental scholarship (for
101-201 language courses) are not eligible.
Deadline for application for Interim (December-January course) and Spring
semester is the first Monday in November. Deadline for summer
and fall is the first Monday in April.
