Q: How long will it take to complete my MPTh degree?
A: Our rotation of courses permits students to complete their MPTh degree in a 2-year time period although the speed and number of courses taken per semester is determined ultimately by the student.

Q: Is there a capstone course or project that I must complete prior to receiving my degree?
A: Yes, we have what we call an Integration Paper which is designed to encompass the many facets of theology and pastoral management that you have learned through your time in the MPTh program. The paper must first be outlined by the student and then submitted to your advisor in which case a timeline and work progress schedule will be determined.

Q: Can I take classes online?
A: Yes, most of the classes will be offered online.

Q: What are people with MPTh degrees doing with their degrees?
A: Graduates are working in a variety of fields including Hospital ministry, Youth Education, Adult Education, Formation programs, and in parishes. Some students got the MPTh in order to enhance their volunteerism in their local congregations. They are leading bible studies, teaching catechism, serving on liturgy committees, etc. With the addition of a certificate in not-for-profit management we anticipate more job opportunities being created.

Q: What's the basic process to getting started in the program?
A: You will first want to compile all of the necessary information, which can be found online at www.sau.edu/mpth/, or you can request that a packet be sent to you.  Requests can be made to Dr. Corinne Winter, Theology Department Chair, at WinterCorinneM@sau.edu or 563-333-6442.

To apply to the MPTh program, submit the Application for Admission to Graduate Studies found in your packet, or apply online at  http://www.sau.edu/apply.htm.  Send a personal mission statement and the $25 graduate application fee along with your application.  Request transcripts from all institutions of higher learning attended, and request two letters of recommendation from persons who have either supervised or worked with you in ministry.  All should be sent directly to Dr. Corinne Winter, St. Ambrose University, 518 West Locust Street, Davenport, IA, 52803.

You will be notified about your acceptance into our program within a couple weeks, and soon thereafter, information for registering for classes will be sent.

Q: Do you offer certificates?
A: Yes, we have a certificate in Pastoral Studies and an Enrichment Program for those who do not want academic credit. Certain certificate programs offered by the Diocese of Davenport are accepted (with some additional expectations) for credit toward the MPTh. These include Youth Ministry, the Ministry Formation Program, and Not-For-Profit certificate.

Q: Do you have to be Catholic to be a part of MPTh program?
A: No, while the foundation of our program is Roman Catholic, all courses are broadly ecumenical and the theological content is readily embraced by any mainstream Christian denomination. Prospective students should be aware that we practice a Historical-Critical approach to the Scriptures. Interested persons of all faiths are welcomed.
