Lehman and Marvin Earn All-American Honorable

Dec. 8, 2008
 Greg
Lehman and Taylor Marvin earned All-American honorable mention when the NAIA
announced the 2008 Brine-NAIA Men's Soccer All-American Teams on December 6. The
three teams and honorable mention list are selected by the NAIA Men's Soccer
All-America Selection Committee.
Lehman led St. Ambrose with 29 goals and 61 total points this season. He
scored six game-winning goals. Lehman finished third in the country in goals
(1.45 goals/game), seventh in points (3.05 points/game) and seventh in
game-winning goals (0.30 goals/game).
Marvin was second on the team with 12 goals, including five game winners, and
27 total points. Marvin was 21st in the country with 0.25 game-winning goals per

Tournament.
Bees Come Up Short in Opening Round of NAIA National
Tournament
Nov. 22, 2008
After receiving an at-large bid into the NAIA National Tournament and hosting
the opening round, the St. Ambrose men’s soccer team fell short of advancing in
the tournament after losing to Dana College 3-1.
The Bees, who received an at-large bid into the tournament after losing a
close game to Grand View in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championship,
played their game against Dana College at a site that gave the Bees only a
slight home-field advantage. The game was held at
Muscatine (Iowa) High School, where SAU had played only once previously all
season - a 3-0 win over Viterbo in the MCC semifinals.
Dana College would strike first in the game, scoring a goal just shy of the
19-minute mark, giving them an early 1-0 lead. They would increase their lead to
two with an unassisted goal in the 50th minute of the game.
The Bees would answer quickly however, as Greg Lehman would cut the lead to
one with an unassisted goal less than two minutes later. It was not enough
however as Dana College would add on, scoring a goal in the 79th minute, giving
them a 3-1 lead and advancing them to the next round in the tournament.
SAU was out-shot on the day 16-14, with Lehman leading the team with five
shots. St. Ambrose would lead the game in corner kicks (7-2), saves (5-4), and
fouls (16-9).
Justin Harper played the full 90 minutes as goal keeper and gave up three
goals while registering five saves.
The Bees finish the season with a record of 14-6-1.
Lehman Named MCC Player of the Year; Eight Earn
All-MCC Honors
Nov. 19, 2008
With
an NAIA National Championship opening round game just days away, the St. Ambrose
men's soccer team was recognized by the Midwest Collegiate Conference for an
outstanding season.
Greg Lehman, from Davenport, Iowa (Pleasant
Valley), was named the conference's Player of the Year. He was one of eight
Fighting Bees named to the all-conference team released by the conference on
Wednesday, Nov. 19.
This is the second straight season Lehman has won the MCC Player of the Year
award. The senior forward led the MCC in nearly every offensive statistical
category in 2008, including goals (14), points (30), points per game (4.29) and
shots (40). He was third in the conference with two game-winning goals.
Lehman was named the MCC Offensive Player of the Week three times this fall
and led the Fighting Bees to an NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship berth.
“Greg is the kind of player a coach gets once in a lifetime," said SAU head
coach Fr. Bud Grant. "He is a natural athlete who simply wants to score goals.
He works very hard and is as likely to be found marking back on defense as
striking. Beyond that, he is a genuinely good man. He works with our younger
players to help them improve, he stays behind to clean out the bus after road
trips, and he quietly suggests ideas to improve practices. Greg richly deserves
this great honor, and I am grateful to the coaches for recognizing him.”
Lehman was joined on the MCC First Team by senior goalkeeper Justin DeSousa,
senior midfielder Taylor Marvin, senior defender Mike Schuenemann and senior
defender Nils Sundin.
DeSousa, from Courtice, Ontario (St.
Stephen's), was 7-1 with four shutouts in starting all eight conference games.
He made 17 saves and allowed only five goals for a 0.71 goals-against average.
Marvin, from Johnston, Iowa (Dowling), was
second on the team with six goals and 13 points in MCC competition. He shared
the team lead with two game-winning goals.
Schuenemann, from Plano, Ill. (Marmion
Academy), finished with one goal and two assists for four points in league games
this season.
Sundin, from Alsip, Ill. (Marist), recorded
one assist while starting all eight MCC matches in 2008.
Senior defender Garrett Alderson, senior
midfielder Max Muchow and senior forward
Kyle Yager earned honorable mention
all-conference.
The complete all-conference team is available on the
MCC website.
Men's Soccer Team to Host NAIA Tournament Match
Nov. 17, 2008
After
what the team thought was a disappointing ending to the 2008 season, the St.
Ambrose men's soccer team will have a chance to rewrite the conclusion. The Bees
earned one of just five at-large bids into the 2008 NAIA Men's Soccer National
Championship, and will now host an opening round match.
St. Ambrose will play Dana (Neb.) at Muscatine High School at 12 p.m. on
Saturday, Nov. 22 in a first round match.
The winners of the 15 opening round games, as well as host school Fresno
Pacific (Calif.), will advance to the 50th Annual Men's Soccer National
Championship final site from Dec. 1-6 in Fresno, Calif.
The Bees thought their season was over following a 1-0 loss at Grand View in
the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament championship game last week. With
three seconds left in that contest, SAU had an apparent game-tying goal waived
off after a player was ruled offsides, giving Grand View the MCC's automatic
berth.
But now the Bees will join the Vikings in the national tournament field.
For St. Ambrose this will be the team's first apperance in the NAIA Men's
Soccer National Championship. SAU finished the year with an overall record of
14-5-1 and took second in the MCC behind Grand View with a 7-1 mark. The Bees
went 13-2-1 over their final 16 games, with the only two losses coming to Grand
View.
Dana College will also be making its first appearance in the national
tournament. The Vikings are 14-3-3 overall and finished fourth in the Great
Plains Athletic Conference. Dana earned the GPAC's second automatic berth by
reaching the finals of the conference tournament, where the Vikings fell 2-1 to
Hastings.
More information on the 2008 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship,
including the complete bracket, is available on the
NAIA website.
Bees Cannot Find Way Past Grand View in MCC Final
Nov. 13, 2008
The St. Ambrose men’s soccer team could not find a way past Grand View in the
championship round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament with an
automatic trip
to nationals on the line as they were defeated by a score of 1-0.
For a moment, it appeared as if the Bees had tied the game at one with about
three seconds remaining, but an offside penalty was issued to SAU, negating the
goal and giving Grand View the win.
The game itself was a defensive game, remaining scoreless for the first 80
minutes until Grand View got on the board first with an unassisted goal in the
81st minute.
The Bees led the game with 18 shots, 12 of those coming on goal. None of them
were able to find the net however as the Grand View goal keeper registered 12
saves.
Greg Lehman led the Bees with seven shots, five of them coming on goal. Goal
keeper Justin DeSousa played the full 90 minutes and registered seven saves
while allowing one goal.
In addition to leading the game in shots (18-12) and shots on goal (12-8),
St. Ambrose led in corner kicks (10-3) and fouls (18-14). Grand View led in
saves (12-7).
Despite not receiving an automatic berth to nationals, the Bees hope their
record of 14-5-1 overall and 7-1 in MCC regular season play may be enough for an
at-large bid. The 2008 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship pairings will be
announced Sunday.
Bees Advance to MCC Championship with Win Over Viterbo
Nov. 9, 2008
The Bees earned themselves a re-match with first-place Grand View in the
Midwest Collegiate Conference Championship after a 3-0 semifinal win over
sixth-seeded Viterbo University on Sunday afternoon.
St. Ambrose, who lost their regular season match with Grand View 4-2 on Oct.
16, will now get a chance at redemption as the two teams will square off in the
MCC Championship round next Sunday. Grand View knocked off fourth-seeded Ashford
University 1-0 in the semifinal round to advance.
First the Bees had to take care of business in the semifinal round against
Viterbo. The game was originally scheduled to be held in Davenport but was later
moved to Muscatine. The Bees were victorious 1-0 against Viterbo in their
regular season matchup on Sept. 20.
The game went scoreless for the first 30 minutes until the Bees’ Greg Lehman
got them on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 30th minute.
SAU would add on as Kendrick Tyson would make it 2-0 Bees’ with a goal
assisted by Kyle Yager in the 40th minute.
Then in the 55th minute of the game, Greg Lehman would score the Bees’ third
and final goal of the afternoon, his second of the day, giving SAU a 3-0 lead.
The goal came on a corner kick assist by midfielder Max Muchow. St. Ambrose
would cruise to victory from there without allowing a goal.
Goal keeper Justin DeSousa played the full 90 minutes and registered three
saves while allowing zero goals.
The Bees dominated in shots, registering 19 of them compared to Viterbo’s
five. SAU also led in corner kicks (5-2) while Viterbo led in saves (8-3) and
fouls (12-9).
SAU’s championship match with Grand View will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m.
in Des Moines. The winner will take home the MCC Championship Title.
MCC Tournament Semifinal Games Moved to
Muscatine High School
Nov. 7, 2008
The Midwest Collegiate Conference Soccer Tournament semifinal matches hosted
by St. Ambrose University on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8-9, have been moved to
Muscatine High School.
The SAU women's soccer team will host Clarke College at 5 p.m. on Saturday
while the SAU men's soccer team will host Viterbo at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Muscatine High School is located at 2705 Cedar Street in Muscatine, Iowa.
Lehman Again Named MCC Offensive Player of the
Week
Nov. 4, 2008
Four St. Ambrose student-athletes were named Midwest Collegiate Conference
Players of the Week in their respective sports on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Greg
Lehman - MCC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Lehman, a senior forward, scored a pair of hat tricks to help the Bees go 2-0-1
last week. He tallied three goals in a 6-2 win over Trinity Christian College on
Oct. 28. After St. Ambrose earned a 1-1 tie at Illinois-Springfield on Oct. 30,
Lehman finished with three goals and an assist as the Bees opened the MCC
Tournament with a 7-5 win over Clarke on Sunday.
This season, Lehman has scored 26 goals and added three assists while
starting 17 matches.
Nikki Boland - MCC Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Boland, a freshman forward, scored three goals over two matches last week. Since
coming back from injury, she has second in every game. Boland scored a goal in a
3-2 loss to #8 Trinity Christian College on Oct. 28 before notching a pair of
goals in a 6-0 MCC Tournament quarterfinal victory over Iowa Wesleyan on
Saturday.
Despite playing in only nine games this season, Boland is second on the team
with five goals.
Krystina Schmitt - MCC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Schmitt, a senior defender, had two tremendous performances last week. She led a
defense that limited #8 Trinity Christian College to only three goals in a 3-2
loss on Oct. 28. Thanks to her efforts on Saturday, St. Ambrose was able to shut
out Iowa Wesleyan 6-0 in a MCC Tournament quarterfinal match.
Offensively, Schmitt has one goal and four assists for the Queen Bees this
season.
Katelyn Lilienthal - MCC Volleyball Player of the Week
Lilienthal, a freshman outside hitter, led the Queen Bees to a 4-2 record last
week. She finished with 60 kills, while making only nine attack errors, and 12
total blocks over the six matches. Lilienthal had 13 kills in a 3-0 win over
Concordia (Wis.) and had 11 kills in victories over Saint Xavier and UW-River
Falls. She reached double figures in digs in four matches and finished with five
blocks against Saint Xavier.
Heading into the MCC Tournament which starts on Saturday, Lilienthal is third
on the Bees with 322 kills this year.
St. Ambrose Victorious in Round One Shoot Out with
Clarke
Nov. 2, 2008
After playing a game that saw only two goals scored in 110 minutes of soccer
during SAU’s regular season finale with Illinois-Springfield, the Bees took part
in a back-and-forth shootout with Clarke College in the first round of the
Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament.
Clarke was the seventh-seed in MCC Tournament after finishing the regular
season 6-10-2. They would put up a good fight however, scoring five goals and
leading at times throughout the game.
It was the Bees though who advanced to the semifinals of the MCC Tournament
by scoring a couple of late goals to seal a round one victory, 7-5.
SAU got on the board first with a goal in the 16th minute by Taylor Marvin,
assisted by Greg Lehman. Clarke quickly answered though with a goal in the 17th
minute, tying the game at one.
The Bees struck again in the 23rd minute of the game on a goal by Kyle Yager
assisted by Simon Murphy. However, Clarke would answer once again with an
unassisted goal, evening the score at two.
Clarke would then take the lead 3-2 on a penalty kick in the 45th minute of
the game. The Bees’ Lehman would then tie up the game again at 3 just a few
minutes later.
The back-and-forth nature of the game continued, as every time Clarke would
take the lead, St. Ambrose would tie it.
Lehman would break that cycle though, scoring a goal assisted by Yager after
Kendrick Tyson had tied the game 11 minutes earlier. This gave the Bees a 6-5
lead until Lehman sealed the game with his third goal of the day, marking his
third hat trick in the last four games.
Lehman led the Bees with three goals. Gamba, Yager, Tyson, and defender Nils
Sundin each added a goal as well. Yager would lead the team with three assists.
Goal keeper Justin DeSousa played the full 90 minutes and gave up five goals
while registering five saves.
St. Ambrose would out-shoot Clarke 29-14. They would also register more
corner kicks (6-2) while Clarke led in saves (12-5) and fouls (11-8).
With the victory, the Bees’ advance to the semifinals of the MCC Tournament
and will play sixth-seeded Viterbo, who knocked off third-seeded Mount Mercy by
a score of 1-0. The SAU-Viterbo game will be held in Davenport next Sunday at 2
p.m. The winner will advance to the MCC Championship and will face the winner of
Grand View vs. Ashford.
Bees Can't Break Tie With Ill.-Springfield After Two
Overtime Periods
Oct. 30, 2008
The St. Ambrose men’s soccer team was unable to break a 1-1 tie against the
University of Illinois-Springfield after two ten minute periods of overtime.
The tie was the first one of the year for the Bees and put their record to
12-4-1.
An unassisted goal by Kendrick Tyson in the 64th minute put SAU on the board
first. It looked as if the Bees were going to hold on for a 1-0 victory until
Illinois-Springfield tied the game at one with an unassisted goal, coming with
less than five minutes remaining.
St. Ambrose registered three shots in the first overtime period and four in
the second, but none of them would find the back of the net.
After giving up one, goal keeper Justin DeSousa was able to prevent
Illinois-Springfield from scoring another goal, preserving the tie. DeSousa
would finish with two saves on the day, one of them coming in overtime.
St. Ambrose would finish with twice as many shots as their opponent (26-13).
They would also lead in corner kicks (7-6) and fouls (13-10).
Illinois-Springfield would finish with more saves (10-2).
Tyson’s goal in the second half was his 5th of the season.
Next up the Bees will host the quarterfinal round of the MCC Tournament at 2
p.m. on Sunday in Davenport. They must win to advance to the semifinals.
Lehman Named MCC Offensive Player of the Week
Oct. 28, 2008
Greg
Lehman was named the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player
of the Week and Danny Nelson earned MCC Men's Golfer of the Week honors on
Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Lehman scored four goals in helping the SAU men's soccer team go 2-0 last
week. He scored one goal in the Bees' 2-1 win at Carthage on Tuesday before
coming up with the hat trick in a 5-1 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. With
St. Ambrose trailing 1-0, Lehman scored the game-tying and eventual game-winning
goals before finishing the hat trick later in the match.
Lehman has scored 20 goals in helping the Bees to an 11-4 record this season.
Nelson shot a two-round 155 at the NAIA Preview Invitational hosted by St.
Ambrose at TPC @ Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25.
He opened with a 75 before shooting an 80 on Saturday to finish eighth overall.
Nelson helped the Bees finish ninth in the 15-team field featuring several
nationally-ranked teams.
Nelson averaged a 76.38 over 16 rounds this fall.
Lehman Records Second Straight Hat Trick as Bees Roll
Oct. 28, 2008
Just three days after his hat trick against Iowa Wesleyan, Greg Lehman turned
in another hat trick performance on Tuesday, this time against non-conference
opponent Trinity Christian College as the Bees cruised to a 6-2 victory.
St. Ambrose entered Tuesday’s game with a record of 11-4 and 7-1 in the
Midwest Collegiate Conference.
Forward Kyle Yager got the Bees on the board first with a goal assisted by
midfielder Taylor Marvin during the 6th minute of the game.
Just four minutes later, Lehman would score the first of his three goals on a
penalty kick, quickly making it 2-0 SAU.
St. Ambrose scored two additional goals in the next two minutes, the first
being an unassisted goal by Marvin. That was followed by Lehman’s 2nd goal of
the day, which came unassisted.
In the 33rd minute of the game, Lehman completed his hat trick with a goal
assisted by midfielder Kendrick Tyson, giving SAU a commanding 5-0 lead.
Trinity would score a goal on a penalty kick during the 46th minute of the
game, cutting the lead to 5-1.
A goal by Tyson (assisted by Yager) in the 57th minute would help SAU reclaim
its 5-goal lead as the Bees cruised to victory.
Lehman’s three goals give him a team-leading 23 on the season.
Justin DeSousa played the first half as goal keeper, giving up zero goals.
Justin Harper took over goal keeper in the second half and gave up two goals.
Neither goal keeper registered a save.
The Bees dominated in the shots category, cumulating 22 shots versus only
five shots from Trinity. The Bees also led in corner kicks (5-1) and fouls
(20-14). Trinity recorded two saves versus zero for St. Ambrose.
Next up the Bees will host the quarterfinal round of the MCC Tournament at 2
p.m. on Sunday in Davenport. They must win to advance to the semifinals.

Oct. 25, 2008
The SAU Men’s Soccer team earned its 7th conference win and 11th overall on
Saturday as they cruised to a 5-1 Senior Day victory over Iowa Wesleyan, due
largely to forward Greg Lehman’s three goals.
Iowa Wesleyan would get on the board first with an unassisted goal, but was
answered quickly by Lehman as he scored the first of his three goals,
unassisted.
The teams then went into halftime all tied up at 1-1.
The second of Lehman’s three goals occurred in the 2nd half on an assist by
midfielder Chris Lavin.
Then, after midfielder Simon Murphy scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-1
SAU, Lehman completed the hat trick with another unassisted goal.
Brendan Reilly scored the Bees’ 5th and final goal of the game, unassisted.

Oct. 21, 2008
The St. Ambrose Men’s Soccer team won its 10th game of the season on Tuesday
thanks to a goal on a penalty kick by SAU’s Taylor Marvin in the 87th minute of
the game against Carthage College.
This game marked the first non-conference game for the Bees since their Sept.
16 contest against Loras College.
Greg Lehman would get the Bees on the board first with his 17th goal of the
season, giving SAU a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute.
Carthage would even up the game at 1 with a penalty kick goal in the 50th
minute. The game would remain tied until the 87th minute when SAU’s Taylor
Marvin scored his 10th goal of the season, this one on a penalty kick to give
St. Ambrose the 2-1 victory.
Chris Davisson made his first start of the year as goal keeper and did well,
registering six saves and allowing just one goal over the 90 minute game.
Greg Lehman, Mike Schuenemann, Taylor Marvin, and Kyle Yager combined for 15
shots as SAU out-shot Carthage 15-11.
St. Ambrose led the game in corner kicks (6-2) while Carthage led in saves
(8-6) and fouls (16-15).
The Bees improve to 10-4 on the season and remain 6-1 in the Midwest
Collegiate Conference.
Next the Bees will head home to face Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday will also be Senior Day, and marks the last MCC game for the Bees until
the tournament begins on Nov. 2.
Kendrick Tyson Scores Twice in Win Over William Penn
Oct. 20, 2008
Kendrick Tyson scored the only goals of the match as St. Ambrose defeated
William Penn 2-0 at the Muscatine Soccer Complex Saturday afternoon. The Bees

free kick at the 14:07 mark. Late in the first half, Tyson scored his second
goal of the match and third goal of the season to push the lead to 2-0. Max
Muchow had the assist.
Justin DeSousa made two saves in earning his sixth shutout of the season.
St. Ambrose will visit Carthage in a non-conference match Tuesday night.
Seven-Game Winning Streak Snapped at Grand View
Oct. 17, 2008
St. Ambrose could not overcome an early deficit and saw its seven-match
winning streak come to an end in a 4-2 loss at Grand View Thursday afternoon.
The Bees are 8-4 overall and 5-1 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference.
Grand View scored two goals in the opening 9:27 of the match to claim sole
possession of first place in the conference. Greg Lehman got St. Ambrose on the
board with his 16th goal of the year late in the first half. Kendrick Tyson was
credited with the assist. But, just 19 seconds later, Grand View pushed the lead
to 3-1 with a penalty kick goal.
Mike Schuenemann got the Bees back to within a goal in the 60th minute but
Grand View ended the scoring with a goal in the 77th minute.
Justin DeSousa made two saves in defeat.
With the loss, SAU drops a game behind Grand View (9-3-1, 6-0) in the MCC
standings. The Bees host William Penn in Muscatine, Iowa, Saturday at 1 p.m.
Bees Shut Out Ashford 7-0

seventh straight match with a 7-0 win over Ashford Wednesday night at the
Muscatine Soccer Complex. The Bees are 8-3 overall and 5-0 in the Midwest
Collegiate Conference.
SAU dominated most of the play, outshooting Ashford 25-8. Murphy scored both
of his goals in the first half as the Bees led 4-0 at halftime. Max Muchow and
Lehman also scored in the first half. Just a little over five minutes into the
second half, Lehman scored his team-high 15th goal of the season for a 5-0 lead.
Taylor Marvin and Tony Villasenor added goals to finish the scoring.
Justin DeSousa was not tested often, saving the only shot he faced.
St. Ambrose will visit Grand View Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Oct. 7, 2008
