MSW - Student Government Association

The MSW-SGA is an organization that assists students in their development as professional social workers who will become valuable assets to the school, university and community. The MSW-SGA serves educational and social purposes. As such, it is a vehicle for students to interact with the School, for students to promote effective communication, and is an instrument of student action for social justice.

Vision

The MSW-SGA exists to empower, support, and enrich the educational and social experience of all present and future students. We will provide an association free of discrimination through promoting social and economic justice. The MSW-SGA is measured through the awareness, participation, and diversity of its members. By providing a generalist approach, we are able to represent a vast majority of issues including, but not limited to: policies and procedures, participation on committees, concerns of the student body and faculty, and representation in the Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA).

Mission

The mission of the MSW-SGA is to empower and support students in a way consistent with the values of the social work profession. The MSW-SGA will employ strategies that are consistent with St. Ambrose University’s mission stressing excellence in teaching and learning in an environment that fosters mutual respect. As a liaison between students, committees, faculty and administration, we will deal with topics and issues which influence a students ability to successfully achieve their academic and career goals.

The MSW-SGA will:

(1) support cohesion between cohorts within the program,

(2) organize and promote opportunities for professional development,

(3) network between students and public/private agencies, and

(4) provide a connection with community, university, and/or political resources.

Structure

The MSW-SGA shall be comprised of all students enrolled in the MSW program at St. Ambrose University. Advisory board is elected by student vote and works collaboratively with each group of students, in order to facilitate effective communication between faculty, students, and staff of the School of Social Work and the larger community. Additionally, the MSW SGA provides an avenue for student action for social justice.

Representatives from the MSW SGA are active on organization, department, and university committees. This participation promotes (1) full respect of student rights within the department and the university, (2) students’ active participation in formulating personal and professional development, and (3) development of just academic policies and student affairs at St. Ambrose. Additionally, MSW SGA selects Student Senators to represent social work in the University Graduate Student Government Association (GSGA).
