The SAU Music Department
Wednesday, May 14th, 7:30pm Originally from Cedartown, Georgia, Casey Thomas received his undergraduate degree in music education from Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama, where his teacher was Dr. Jim Roberts. During his time at JSU he served for three years as the horn line caption head with the “Marching Southerners” band, and for two years as a brass instructor with the “Spirit from JSU” drum and bugle corps, student director of the basketball pep band, and conductor of the brass choir. Since 2003, he has been pursuing a concurrent Masters and Doctorate of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance from the University of Iowa where he studies with Dr. David Gier. During the spring semester of 2006, Mr. Thomas was the Visiting Director of Bands at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Currently he serves as Assistant Director of Bands and Instructor of Low Brass at Cornell College and at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa he is the Adjunct Instructor of Low Brass. Mr. Thomas is the former conductor of the Iowa Brass Choir and the current Music Director of the Eastern Iowa Brass Band. He performs with the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, is the former bass trombonist with the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Ottumwa, Muscatine and the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestras. Mr. Thomas is a member of Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity, Omicron Delta Kappa, and is a member and contributing music resource editor with the International Trombone Association. Aura Strohschein holds an "Artist in Residence" position at Cornell College. She is also on faculty at the Preucil School of Music. Currently, she is pursuing a DMA degree from The University of Iowa under the guidance of Dr. Rene Lecuona. She obtained her Bachelor degrees from Ball State University [B.A. in French with departmental honors; B.M. in piano performance; Honors diploma] and her Master in Music Performance degree from The University of Toledo where she won first prizes in the concerto, chamber music, and composition competitions. Ms. Strohschein also studied at the Conservatoire National de Region de Lille in France for three years. In 2006 she has obtained lessons in Vienna, Pollau, and Salzburg, Austria. Her most prominent teachers include Paul Badura-Skoda, Konstance Rieckh, Bernard Lerouge, Christopher Harding, Reiko Shigeoki-Neriki, Michael Boyd, Ray Kilburn, Mitchel Andrews, Joel Schoenhals, Rebecca Penneys, and Imre Rohmann.
At St. Ambrose, you will receive high-quality experiences in music within the context of a broad-based liberal arts education. Class sizes are small, which means you will receive personal instruction customized to your particular needs and interests. All students are encouraged to participate in SAU performance ensembles. All bands, choirs and orchestras are comprised of students from a wide variety of majors from across campus in addition to music majors. A number of ensembles are active at St. Ambrose, and they are open to all students regardless of major. These groups perform at formal and informal events on campus and throughout the community, giving students performance experience before large, diverse audiences. SAU Ensembles also tour periodically throughout the Midwest and the United States. Scholarship and financial aid opportunities are available to ALL SAU students, regardless of major.
