Jazz Combo

The Jazz Combo exists to expose students to a variety of jazz styles and genres and provide performance opportunities both on and off campus. The focus of the ensemble will be to study the art form of jazz, culminating in the performance experience.

The Combo explores a wide variety of styles related to the jazz idiom. Swing, blues, bebop, fusion and contemporary styles will be explored and performed. It is important for all members of the ensemble to be receptive to forms and styles with which they may not be well acquainted. A priority will also be placed on allowing as many players as are interested a chance to practice improvisation in a rehearsal and performance setting.

Under the direction of Dr. Gene Bechen, the Jazz Combo rehearse twice a week and give several off-campus performances as well as home concerts in the Galvin Fine Arts Center. Special appearances have included performing for the REC Annual Meeting, the Iowa-Illinois Auto Show, and several area school performances.

Membership in the band is open to any St Ambrose student regardless of major, but requires an audition. Click here to hear the SAU Jazz Combo.
