Judy Hyland

Judy Hyland, originally from Bradford, Illinois, began her career at St. Ambrose as an undergraduate student. She began her teaching career here as well, as a piano teacher for preparatory students. After graduating from St. Ambrose, she received a M.Mus degree from the University of Iowa, studying with Kerry Grippe. She also holds National Professional Certification in Piano and in Music Theory, awarded by the National Music Teachers Association.

Judy has maintained a private piano studio in Davenport for over 25 years, teaching students of all ages and ability levels both privately and in groups. She taught at Marycrest International University for 17 years before joining the music faculty at St. Ambrose in 1994. Judy teaches piano and music theory, and is a staff accompanist for the vocal department.

Ms. Hyland is active in several music organizations and holds offices in National Federation of Music Clubs, Iowa Federation of Music Clubs, National Music Teachers Association, Iowa Music Teachers Association, Quad City Music Teachers Association, PACE (Promoting the Arts in Catholic Education), National Piano Foundation, and Piano for a Richer Life. She founded the Quad City Music Teachers Association, and co-founded their annual Monster Concert, a day-long keyboard ensemble performance featuring Quad City area piano students. Ms. Hyland has adjudicated auditions, festivals and competitions, and has served as a clinician throughout Iowa and Illinois. She has performed with Friends of Chamber, and is one of the "Digital Dames", a 5-member keyboard ensemble the performs music live on 5 Clavinova digital pianos.

Judy has been chair of Holy Family School's "Day with the Arts" for several years, and has received several grants from the Iowa Arts Council and the Quad City Arts Council for "Day with the Arts" and for her work in composing/arranging new material for the "Digital Dames" to perform. Several of her arrangements were premiered at the National Music Teachers National Convention in Minneapolis in March, 2000. Judy has had several articles published in the Iowa Music Teacher magazine.
