Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT)

A Post-professional Degree for the Advancing Practitioner

The St. Ambrose University Occupational Therapy Department reflects the professional belief that post-professional education is a means to expand practice, increase knowledge base, and enhance the professional identity within a changing health climate. As such, the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program offers occupational therapy practitioners an opportunity to participate in a post-professional program focused on the development of clinical reasoning skills based in evidence, the use of research and scholarly pursuits to enhance client and community services, and the promotion of career advancement and lifelong learning.

The curriculum reflects practice changes and trends within occupational therapy with an emphasis on three core concepts.
     1.  Advanced knowledge should be grounded in evidence-based
practice and research oriented best practice.
     2.  Advanced clinical reasoning, knowledge of theory and skills
are needed to support excellent clinical application with
          clients.
     3.  An individualized career advancement focus will enhance the
specific professional development needs of the clinician.
The curriculum culminates with a research paper or project designed to impact and support advanced practice.

The curriculum consists of 30 credits. It is anticipated that most students would complete the coursework in the program within two years with the final thesis or project being completed in a third year. Courses are taught in a combined format of face-to-face meetings and on-line course delivery. The courses lend themselves to varied formats and will be scheduled to accommodate the working professional. Courses will be offered in the evenings, on week-ends, in three to five day intensives, or on-line.
