Phi Eta Sigma
at St. Ambrose University
In
1923 Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois as a freshmen men's
scholastic honor fraternity. Phi Eta Sigma has been a member of the
College Honor Societies since 1937. In 1974 Phi Eta Sigma dropped its
fraternity designation and started admitting women.
In 1882
St. Ambrose was founded by the Rev. John McMullen, the first bishop of the
Diocese of Davenport, as a seminary and a school of commerce for men. The
current Locust Street campus was established July 5, 1885, with the dedication
of Ambrose Hall. In 1927, St. Ambrose was admitted to the North Central
Association of Colleges and fully accredited. In 1968, St. Ambrose became fully
coeducational. St. Ambrose still maintains close ties with the Diocese of
Davenport. St. Ambrose has maintained a Region IV Phi Eta Sigma Chapter
since Dec 11, 1967.
In the Fall of 2007
new Phi Eta Sigma member Brian Palmer made a suggestion to improve
communications by creating a website for the St. Ambrose University
chapter. This suggestion was extremely well received by the chapters
leadership. Brian was recruited into the chapters Public Relations Subcommittee
by it's leader Megan Matyasse and assigned to head up the website project.
Brian worked with Megan, Faculty Advisor Dr. Ryan Dye and subsequently chapter
secretary Ashley Jamison-Love to secure permission for the site. During
this time Brian also had several correspondences with the chapters leadership as
well as the Phi Eta Sigma national web master and a couple other chapters
web masters about creating the web site. After permission was
granted in the Spring of 2007 Brian worked to create the first ever Phi Eta
Sigma website for the St. Ambrose University chapter. Brian extends a huge
Thank you to all those mentioned above especially Dr. Dye for inviting Brian to
join Phi Eta Sigma, Megan for recruiting Brian into the PR subcommittee and
tasking the project to Brian and the web masters of the Phi Eta Sigma National,
University of Iowa and Kansas State University chapters for sharing their insight, ideas and knowledge.
On Nov
17, 2008 the St. Ambrose University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma website went
online. The following day National Phi Eta Sigma added a link to their
chapters website to the St. Ambrose University chapters new website. The St. Ambrose University
chapter of Phi Eta Sigma gets the additional honor of being the first honor
society on campus to have a website.
