Course of Study in Political Science

The Department of Political Science and Leadership Studies recently revised its curriculum for the purpose of enhancing the educational opportunities for political science majors, international studies majors, and related minors. In particular, the Department seeks to improve student research skills in preparation for law school or graduate study in a related field.

We have created a capstone course (PSCI 400 – Capstone: Research in Political Science - WI). For senior level majors and related minors, students in this course research and produce an original academic research paper. Another goal of the course is to provide an opportunity for students to integrate and synthesize the body of course work completed in the Department of Political Science and Leadership Studies, as well as with other related, programs, majors, and minors.

A set of 300 level courses are specially designated to prepare the student for PSCI 400. The student needs to complete 9 credits from the following sequence in order to enroll in the capstone (PSCI 400): PSCI 307 or PSCI 308; One of the following – PSCI 309, 313, 316, 319; and PSCI 380. The Interdisciplinary Minor in Pre-Law Studies is for students interested in studying law. It has a threefold mission:

First, it seeks to encourage sustained reflection upon the relationship between law and human nature. What is the relationship between law and justice? What are the different kinds of law, and what are the grounds for obedience to these laws? What are the potential conflicts human beings face when different laws or different kinds of law come into conflict?

Second, it seeks to give students a practical introduction to the basic elements of the American legal system, as well as familiarity with other legal systems and with the history of legal thought and practice.

Third, it seeks to provide students with the background and skills necessary for success in law school and in the field of law. Special attention will be given to logical and critical thinking, persuasive argument, and cogent speaking and writing.
