MISSION STATEMENT

The word "politics" comes from the Greek word polis, which means "city" or "regime." According to Aristotle - the first political scientist - the polis is the comprehensive association whose end or purpose is the complete human life. Political Science, then, involves not only the scientific study of political and legal institutions, but of human nature, justice and the common good. The Department of Political Science and Leadership Studies at St. Ambrose University is dedicated to these ends.

DEPARTMENT OBJECTIVES

The St. Ambrose Department of Political Science and Leadership Studies is committed to the following objectives:

1. The department provides quality instruction in the liberal arts tradition. Courses are designed to present different and often conflicting points of view on a variety of important political questions. Study of how different persons have answered these questions enlarges the mind and serves to cultivate critical reasoning skills.

2. The department promotes enlightened and responsible citizenship through in-depth study of the historical and continuing controversies which inform political discourse in our country, our region, and our world.

3. The department prepares students for graduate study in political science, or for careers in other fields through the Pre-Law, International Politics, and Public Administration concentrations.

4. Students gain firsthand knowledge and practical skills through internships or participation in Mock Trial or Model UN

For more information about the department, contact Dr. Joe Hebert.
