Study Guide for Chapter 14
1. What information do the lateral pathways in the spinal cord carry? What is the most important of these pathways? You should know the origins and terminations of this pathway. What are the other components of the lateral pathways (and their origins and terminations)?
2. What do lesions in the lateral pathways produce? In what way are lesions in the corticospinal tracts similar and dissimilar to lesions of the entire lateral pathways?
3. What kinds of movements are least likely to be regained following a stroke that damages either the motor cortex or the corticospinal tract?
4. What are the primary tracts within the ventromedial pathways? If you know the names of these tracts, then you should also be able to provide the origins and terminations. What type of information does each of these tracts carry?
5. What areas of the cortex are important in voluntary movement? What role does each of these areas play?
