St. Ambrose University has been named a "Military Friendly School" by veteran-owned Victory Media G.I. Jobs. This distinction places St. Ambrose in the top 15 percent of colleges and universities that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students, according to G.I. Jobs.

“The list of Military Friendly Schools is especially important now because the recently enacted Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher.

In order to serve all veterans who attend St. Ambrose, the university has put into place, several additional programs and initiatives.

The Yellow Ribbon program allows qualified veterans to take advantage of a private liberal arts education for free or at a very low cost.

The St. Ambrose campus student veteran organization, MAVO (Military & Veterans Organization), is working to assist veterans as they pursue a college degree, as well as educate and inform the campus community about specific veteran needs and issues.

St. Ambrose will provide a special Veteran's Student Orientation beginning this fall. Veterans will have the opportunity to learn more about their and the university's roles and responsibilities; meet representatives from St. Ambrose's campus student veterans organization and the Services for Students with Disabilities Office; and form relationships with other veterans studying at St. Ambrose.

Veteran students who come to St. Ambrose with a recognized disability such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, can receive assistance from the Services for Students with Disabilities office. The office is reaching out to the veteran student population. Its director serves as advisor to the St. Ambrose Military and Veterans Organization (MAVO) Student Chapter group and will be a part of the Veteran's Student Orientation. Disability services and appropriate accommodations are available to students with physical and learning disabilities, as well.

Through veteran's benefits and St. Ambrose's financial contribution, many veterans can take advantage of a private liberal arts education for free or at a very low cost. St. Ambrose is partnering with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to offer the Yellow Ribbon Program, a new, comprehensive education benefit under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. With a matching grant from the VA, St. Ambrose will waive up to $6,000 or 50 percent of those expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate. Fees also are paid up to $11,817 per semester. The program is available for undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as the adult learner ACCEL program.

Veterans who served after Sept. 10, 2001 for at least 36 months are eligible for 100% benefits. Any veteran who served between 90 days and less than 36 months is pro-rated for their benefits under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Program benefits are available for veterans who enroll in classes after August 1, 2009.

A letter describing the benefits can be downloaded here (pdf).
