Statement by Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack March 17, 2003 Des Moines -- Below is a statement of Governor Tom Vilsack regarding the address to the nation by President Bush: "It is obvious tonight from the President's remarks that some very critical decisions have been made regarding the escalating situation with Iraq. As our nation prepares for a possible war, our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the brave men and women across the country and throughout Iowa who have been called to duty-and who may be in harms way in the next forty-eight hours and beyond. "In addition to the President's remarks, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge tonight informed the nation's governors that the U.S. Terror Alert has been heightened one level from Yellow to Orange. "Secretary Ridge has given us our orders to help act as a deterrent to any potential terrorist acts against the homeland. We will continue to work with Iowa Homeland Security Advisor, Ellen Gordon, and follow the appropriate procedures just as we have in the past when the threat level has been elevated. Iowans will see a greater security presence at public buildings and we will be notifying local authorities statewide of the elevated risk. "Secretary Ridge also alerted the governors that additional steps will be taken by the federal government to secure our nation's borders, ports and waterways, energy facilities, and transportation facilities and that additional public health resources will be provided so that we are prepared in the event of an attack of any kind. Finally, Secretary Ridge asked the states to work with the private sector to ensure that our nation's critical assets are protected. We will continue to do our job of protecting our people and our communities. "While our nation's military has an important job to do abroad, it is imperative to remember the jobs we as citizens have to do here at home. First and foremost we must be alert and be prepared. We must also work to ensure a strong national-and state-economy. That means continuing to go about our business in a calm but cautious manner. Working together, we must all endeavor to strengthen our state and our country so these brave soldiers return home to an even better place," said Governor Vilsack. Return to SAU Responds |
