Hurricane Katrina Relief
St.
Ambrose has stepped up for
Hurricane Katrina relief, with more contributions coming in
daily. Much of the money has been donated directly to Campus
Ministry, which has designated
Catholic
Charities
as its relief organization.

KALA Radio Raises $1,200 for Katrina Victims
St. Ambrose University-operated KALA Radio,
88.5 & 105.5 FM, hosted a music marathon from 7 a.m. until
midnight on Friday, Sept. 9, to help raise funds for those
in need in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
“Hip-hop and
R&B are popular, so we thought we would extend our regular
Friday programming of that music to get the whole Quad City
community excited about lending a hand. Many jazz, blues and
urban/hip-hop musicians we feature on KALA are from the
areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. It really does hit
closer to home than one might think,” said David Baker, KALA
operations manager.
KALA
listeners were asked to bring monetary donations to a
drive-through collection point on campus. The marathon
raised more than $1,200, which was given to SAU Campus
Ministry to include in their relief drive.
Raising Money, $2 by $2, at the SAU/Loras
Football Game
$2 from every game ticket sold on Saturday,
Sept. 10, went to Hurricane Relief efforts. Also, at
halftime the athletics department collected $542.
Ambrose vs. Loras -- Residence Life, That Is
The week of
Sept. 5, the St. Ambrose Residence Life Office challenged
its counterpart at Loras College to an all-out fundraising
competition leading up to the SAU/Loras football game on
Saturday, Sept. 10.
Just as the Fighting Bees were victorious on
the football field, St. Ambrose was victorious in the
fundraising competition. St. Ambrose’s total raised for the
victims of Hurricane Katrina, which includes KALA’s
fund-raising efforts and a Spirit Day drive on Sept. 2, was
$5,251, while Loras raised $4,128.
In addition, Lowe’s
Home Improvement Center, Davenport, kicked in a match of
$1,455.
The funds will go to two groups working in
the Gulf Region, the Red Cross and Catholic Charities.
Bake Sale
On Sept. 9, members of the SAU Psychology
Club and Psi Chi Honor Society held a bake sale to help the
victims of hurricane Katrina, raising nearly $500. The money
went to SAU Campus Ministry’s hurricane relief efforts and
Noah’s Wish, an organization working in the Gulf Coast
rescuing animals, sheltering them and reuniting them with
their owners.
Prayer Vigil
An all-night vigil of prayer and reflection
was held in Christ the King Chapel Thursday, Sept. 8.
