Important Information for New Students –
Read
Before Starting the Placement Essay
One of the primary tools that you will use
throughout your university studies is writing. To better serve your
needs in the area of composition, the university asks that you complete
a forty-five minute placement essay assignment. The essay you write
will be read by a panel of university readers. The paper’s score when
combined with your standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) in English and
a review of your high school courses and grades will help us place you
in either our ENGL 100 Introduction to Writing class or ENGL 101 Written
Communication class.
We require that you
complete the placement essay assignment within the forty-five minute
time limit and without any outside help because we need a genuine
example of your writing ability in order to place you into the
appropriate composition class. If your computer has spell check or
grammar check, you are welcome to use those support devices just as you
will be able to use them when writing papers for your SAU classes.
