Fieldwork Abroad
Students accepted into the St. Ambrose Ireland Program may have the
opportunity to gain related-work experience in a fieldwork placement or an
internship arrangement.
Carlow College has an extensive program in "social studies,"
which we might interpret to mean a career working in social agencies. Students in "social studies" take several years of coursework in
psychology and sociology, then they apply the theory learned in the
classroom to real world experiences in the field.
IT Carlow has agreed to work with St. Ambrose students to find an
appropriate fieldwork placement. Students in Psychology, Sociology,
pre-OT, pre-PT, Nursing, Education, and the health sciences should have no
problem finding a challenging placement in a Carlow social welfare agency.
(SAU students, though, will be screened by SAU and IT Carlow faculty
to make sure that they have the skills necessary to perform well in a
placement setting.)
The St. Ambrose Ireland Program will also work together with students
in any major field to find an internship opportunity in the student's
major field of study in Carlow. Carlow College and IT Carlow have good relations
with any number of local businesses in the county, and there will be many
opportunities for students, particularly those in Public Relations and
Marketing Communications, Business Administration, and liberal arts majors
(including the fine arts). Internships will require initiative,
flexibility, and the willingness to learn - but the rewards are quite
profound for those who complete a successful experience.
We hope that these opportunities enhance the traditional
classroom-based approach to study abroad in Ireland!
