SAU Drops 6-3 Decision at Grinnell

Amanda Gomez won her singles and doubles match in a 6-3 loss at Grinnell. The
Queen Bees are 3-4 overall this fall.
Gomez won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at #1 singles after earning an 8-4 win at #1
doubles with Adrianne Foley. Rachel Sarafin was the other winner for SAU,
surviving in a third-set super-tiebreaker. She won her #2 singles match 6-2,
0-6, 10-7. Melanie Blazevic fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at #6 singles.
Bees Fall 5-4 to Augustana, Cornell
St. Ambrose dropped close meets to Augustana and Cornell Sunday by identical
5-4 scores. The Bees are 2-3 this season.
Luke Ebener and Luke Wood each won two singles matches in straight sets at
the #1 and #4 positions, respectively. Ebener won 6-2, 6-2 against Augustana and
6-2, 6-3 against Cornell. Wood posted 6-4, 6-2 wins in both of his matches.
Michael Harts earned a 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 win at #6 singles against Augustana
while Ebener teamed with Mike Medchill to claim an 8-5 win at #1 doubles.
Against Cornell, Ryan Vretis took a 6-3, 6-2 win at #3 singles and the #2
doubles team of Vretis and Wood won 8-2. SAU dropped a pair of tight matches
against Cornell - Nick Goodknight fell 10-5 in a third-set super-tiebreaker at
#5 singles and the team of Ebener and Medchill lost at #1 doubles in a
tiebreaker 9-8 (7-4).
Pair of Three-Set Wins Help Bees Sink Augustana
Rachel Sarafin and Mary Nodland won third-set super-tiebreakers as St.
Ambrose got past Augustana 5-4. The Bees are 3-3 this season.
Both Sarafin and Nodland had to regroup after losing second sets. Sarafin won
the first set 6-1 before dropping the second set 7-5. She recovered for a 10-7
win in the super-tiebreaker at #2 singles. Nodland and her opponent at #5
singles each won a set 6-4 before Nodland took the win 10-8 in the third.
At #1 singles, Amanda Gomez took a 6-2, 7-5 victory as SAU split the six
singles matches with their cross-river rival.
The Queen Bees grabbed a 2-1 edge after doubles play. Gomez and Adrianne
Foley won their #1 doubles match 8-6 while Sarafin and Jenelle Bayer claimed an
8-4 win at #2 doubles.
The St. Ambrose men and women lost by identical 6-3 scores to Central
College. The men are 2-1 this season while the women dropped to 2-3.
The men won two singles matches, led by Luke Ebener's 6-2, 7-5 win at the #1
position. Kyle Wood won 7-6, 6-4 at #3 singles. The other SAU victory came at #1
doubles, where Ebener and Mike Medchill paired for an 8-6 victory.
The Queen Bees also won two singles matches. Amanda Gomez picked up a 6-4,
6-2 win at #1 singles and Rachel Sarafin won 6-3, 7-6 at the #2 spot. Gomez and
Adrianne Foley posted an 8-3 win at #2 doubles.
SAU Men and Women Defeat Judson
The St. Ambrose men and women both came away with victories over Judson
Friday. The men won 9-0 while the women took a 7-2 victory.
Five of the six singles matches on the men's side were decided in straight
sets. Ryan Vretis was stretched to a third-set super-tiebreaker before
prevailing 6-2, 3-6, 17-15 at #3 singles. The others were finished in two - Luke
Ebener (#1) won 6-1, 6-4; Mike Medchill (#2) won 6-0, 6-0; Luke Wood (#4) won
6-0, 6-1; Andrew Roos (#5) won 6-2, 6-2; and Michael Harts (#6) won 6-1, 6-1.
The Bees also swept the three doubles matches. Medchill and Ebener won 8-4 at
#1 doubles, Vretis and Wood earned an 8-3 win at #2 doubles and Nick Goodknight
and Chris Cassens outlasted their opponents 8-6 at #3 doubles.
Like the men, the Queen Bees won all three doubles matches. Maurita Flo and
Mary Nodland (#1), Adrianne Foley and Liz Findley (#2) and Jenelle Bayer and
Staci Kapinus (#3) all won doubles matches 8-1.
Rachel Sarafin picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at #1 singles; Emily Anderson won
6-0, 6-4 at #2 singles; Jessie Eberhardt posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at #5 singles;
and Lindsey Criss claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at #6 singles. The Queen Bees are 2-2
this season.
Emily Anderson was the only Queen Bee to win a singles match as SAU fell to
Cornell 7-2. Anderson earned a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win at #6 singles.
While Anderson won in a third-set super-tiebreaker, Amanda Gomez lost in one.
Gomez fell 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 13-11 at #1 singles. The Bees dropped the other four
singles matches in straight sets.
Rachel Sarafin and Jenelle Bayer claimed an 8-2 win at #2 doubles for the
other SAU win.
Sarafin Wins #2 Singles Flight at Quincy Tournament
Junior
Rachel Sarafin won three matches to claim the championship at the #2 singles
flight of the Quincy Fall Classic. All three of her wins, including a 6-4, 6-3
decision in the championship, came in straight sets.
The Queen Bees also won the #1 doubles flight as Amanda Gomez and Adrianne
Foley won all three matches, including a pair of 9-8 victories.
Jenelle Bayer and Mary Nodland dropped semifinal matches in the #3 and #5
singles flights, respectively, only to bounce back to claim third place.
Gomez was forced to retire with a 2-1 lead in the first set of her semifinal
match at #1 singles. She did not compete in the third-place match. Foley also
took fourth place at #4 singles. After losing her first match, Melanie Blazevic
picked up back-to-back wins to take fifth place at #6 singles.
Sarafin and Bayer took third place in the #2 doubles flight while Blazevic
and Emily Turner finished fifth at #3 doubles.
Men Win, Women Fall to Illinois-Springfield
The St. Ambrose men swept all three doubles matches to defeat
Illinois-Springfield 5-4 in the team's first meet of the year. Luke Ebener and
Luke Wood won singles matches to secure the win.
Ebener and Mike Medchill teamed for an 8-5 win #1 doubles and Wood and Ryan
Vretis combined for an 8-3 win at #2 doubles. The team of Nick Goodknight and
Andrew Roos won the #3 doubles match by forfeit.
After dropping the first set 6-3, Ebener rebounded to claim the second set
6-1 and took the third-set super-tiebreaker 10-7 at #1 singles. Wood won by
forfeit at #6 singles. Roos dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) match at #5
singles.
The Queen Bees were not as fortunate, dropping all nine matches. Rachel
Sarafin and Jenelle Bayer lost in third-set super-tiebreakers at #2 and #3
singles, respectively.
Queen Bees Open Year by Defeating Loras
Adrianne Foley and Mary Nodland won in straight sets as the Queen Bees opened
the 2009-10 dual season with a 6-3 win over Loras. Amanda Gomez and Jenelle
Bayer picked up third-set super-tiebreaker wins as SAU won four of the six
singles matches.
Foley won 6-0, 6-4 at #4 singles and Nodland earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at #6. At
#1 singles, Gomez survived 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. After dropping a second-set
tiebreaker 7-3, Bayer bounced back to win the third 10-4 at the #3 spot.
Bayer and Rachel Sarafin picked up an 8-4 win at #1 doubles while Gomez and
Foley teamed for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles.
