FIRST STUDIO PRODUCTION OF THE 05-06 SEASON
St. Ambrose University’s 2005-2006
Theatre Season is about to open in a very intimate way with
the upcoming production of Terence McNally’s Frankie and
Johnny in the Clair de Lune in SAU’s Studio Theatre.
McNally’s play deals with a night in
the lives of the middle-aged Frankie and Johnny; they work
in the same diner and, for tonight, are lovers. Over the
course of the evening, the two lock horns and hearts as they
attempt to come to a decision about their futures together
and to come to terms with their own failures and successes.
SAU senior Scott Peake is heading this production and
explained why he wanted to direct it: “It’s one of those
scripts that is terribly funny and touching at the same
time. It has so much to say about life, relationships with
people, and missed opportunities.”
Portraying the title characters are SAU
alumnus Joe Goodall (Johnny) and SAU Junior Marianna
Caldwell (Frankie). Caldwell is thrilled at getting a
chance to unravel her character. “Frankie is very complex;
it’s a challenge to me to play the heavy issues she’s
dealing with.” On board the crew and design team are
Sophomore Madeline Dudziak (Stage Manager), Senior Danielle
Zack (Assistant Stage Manager and Props Mistress), Senior
Aaron Hook (Technical Director), Senior Erin Gayman (Set
Designer), Senior Sarah Foley (Costume Designer), Junior
Kristy Heithoff (Lighting Designer), and Junior Andrew
Harvey (Sound Designer).
The cast and crew have been working
hard during the three-week rehearsal period allotted to the
first slot of the Studio Theatre season in order to get the
show on its feet in time for its opening on Friday, Sept. 9.
The show will run on Friday, Sept. 9th
and Saturday the 10th at 7:30 pm and also on
Sunday the 11th at 3 pm. An additional matinee
will also be performed on Saturday the 10th at 3pm. Tickets
cost $6 and may be purchased at the Galvin Box Office.
Seats are limited so get your tickets today!
This show is for mature audiences only
due to language and sexual content.

THEATRE PICNIC HELPS WELCOME NEW STUDENTS
A new school year begins and so does a
fresh new season of theatrical productions and activities.
The annual Theatre Picnic held on Monday, August 29th
was a great occasion to catch up with old friends and get to
know about all the new theatre activities planned. There
were about seventy people in attendance; the majority of who
were Theatre Majors or Minors. “I thought the picnic was a
lot of fun. It was great seeing so many new faces, and it’ll
be great seeing them again around the department,” commented
Senior Amanda Bourn.
The year is full of exciting things to
do beyond our regular theatrical season, including new
classes, traveling abroad and working with a guest director.
Students this year have a great opportunity to take a
Theatre Movement class with Shellee Frazee. Students also
have an opportunity to go to New York over winter break, or
to London this May. St. Ambrose alumnus David Bonde ('96) is
going to guest direct for the Main Stage spring production
of A Lie of the Mind by Sam Shepard. In addition to
some great productions this spring, the theatre and music
departments will be coming together to host a class on
Musical Theatre. Dr. Corinne Johnson also reminded Theatre
Majors and Minors in the Junior Class that she will be
teaching Junior Seminar in the spring semester.
The picnic also included elections for
the SAU Call Board for the 2005-2006 school year. The Call
Board consists of one member from each class, and serves as
an additional connection between the students and the
faculty. In addition to being a voice for the students, the
Call Board also attends the American College Theatre
Festival in January, and helps plan the end-of-the-year
party, The Galvins. The voting system was changed slightly
this year, allowing everyone to vote for all the members,
instead of voting only for the member from your own class.
The 2005-2006 Call Board is:
Jamie Booher –Senior
Jacob Kendall –Junior
Madeline Dudziak –Sophomore
Emily Kurash –Freshmen
If you are wanting to get more involved
with the theatre, or perhaps this is your first year,
remember that acting is not your only option. Several of the
shows still need production team members and other backstage
assistance. If you are interested in any of the following
positions, talk to Technical Director Kris Eitrheim.

SUMMER FUN WITH THEATRE
The Theatre Faculty at St. Ambrose
University always encourage their students to have a great
summer; however, rather than taking time off, they urge the
learning actors and technicians to be involved with theatre
throughout the summer. Many theatrical Ambrosians did just
that!
Marianna Caldwell, a Theatre Major in
her Junior year, spent her summer at the Hangar Theatre in
Ithaca, NY. Caldwell was part of the Hangar’s student
company and along with taking workshops from trained
professionals, she performed such roles as Lily in “Lily's
Purple Plastic Purse" and Casey in Anton In Showbusiness.
When talking of her summer, Caldwell expresses that “it was
just amazing. I had the best time and I learned a lot.”
Jack Kloppenborg, a Sophomore Theatre
Major also spent his summer away from home as part of the
Brownsville Theatre’s student company. The Brownsville
Theatre is located in Nebraska, and primarily performs
comedies. Kloppenborg had the opportunity to perform in
such shows as Run For Your Wife and The Mouse Trap.
When speaking of his experience, Kloppenborg says, “It was a
great experience for my first summer doing professional
work—and they definitely worked us hard!”
Sam Michael and Chris Konrady, both
Senior Theatre Majors, had work in technical theatre this
summer. Mr. Konrady worked as an electrical technician at
Minnesota’s “Valley Fair Theme Park”, and Mr. Michael was a
technician at America Player's Theatre in Spring Green,
Wisconsin.
Jenny Stodd, a Theatre Major in her
final year at SAU, worked here in the Quad Cities. She
finished playing the role of Tuptim in Circa ’21 Dinner
Playhouse’s production of The King and I this June.
The show ran for eight weeks, and Stodd says, “Working at
Circa is always a delight. After a long run you’re excited
to move on, but it’s very hard at the same time.”
Several other students did work in
theatre here in the area as well. Junior Andrew Harvey
performed in Moon Over Buffalo at the Rivoli Theatre
in Monmouth, IL. Junior Kristy Heithoff spent her summer
working with Technical Director Kris Eitrheim in the SAU
scene shop along with Senior Aaron Hook. Sophomore
Christine Goodall performed in Countryside Community
Theatre’s production of Cinderella, while Freshman
Sarah Ulloa performed in Smokey Joe’s Café for the
same theatre. Seniors Danielle Mason and Tyson Danner
worked on an independent production of Ragtime and
Senior Dan McGinn played Motel in Quad City Music Guild’s
production of Fiddler on the Roof.
The St. Ambrose University Theatre
Department congratulates its students on their many summer
accomplishments! If you participated in a theatrical
activity this summer, or spent time doing something just as
exciting, please send an e-mail to
SAUTheatreNews@yahoo.com.

THEATRE IN IRELAND COURSE : FROM THE MISSISSIPPI TO THE
LIFFEY
Some people go down the street to see
theatre while others go to Broadway; And then, there are
those who travel overseas. Such was the case this past May
Interim semester when twelve students, two professors and
two spouses crossed the salty Atlantic Ocean and landed in
rainy Eireann—that is, Ireland—as part of the Theatre in
Ireland program.
The class met in the Galvin Studio
Theatre for a week of lectures and projects on the Emerald
Isle, its theatre, and the sociopolitical effects said
theatre had on the course of Irish history. After the week
of classes, the group spent two weeks in Ireland,
trailblazing its way from the populated east coast to the
rocky frontiers of the west.
The group spent a week in Dublin (the
Republic of Ireland’s capital city) where they soaked in the
city’s culture through tours of historical sites—such as the
General Post Office where the 1916 uprising of what would
later become the Irish Republican Army declared Ireland a
free state—cozy pubs and a wide variety of theatre. The
plays viewed in Dublin included a new Irish musical, The
Wiremen, at the Gate Theatre; A Doll’s House at
the Abbey Theatre; Lady Windermere’s Fan at the
Gaiety Theatre; What Happened to Bridgie Cleary
at the Peacock Theatre; and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia
at the Project Arts Centre. “Dublin was great,” says SAU
sophomore Sean Tweedale. “It was a lot of fun to see plays
and then talk about them later with the natives in one of
the pubs.”
Other destinations included Carlow
College in County Carlow where the group attended private
lectures from the faculty on Irish theatre’s social effects
and a detailed examination of Brian Friel’s play
Translations. The group also made a pit stop in
Kilkenny to tour a castle before moving on to Galway City in
County Galway. While in Galway, the group saw an
experimental dance show about love during the 1916 Easter
Rising called At Swim, Two Boys at the Earthfall
Theatre. For junior Andrew Harvey, the highlight of the
trip was taking the ferry across Galway Bay to the mystical
Aran Islands. “Inis Mor was the most amazing place.
To me, that embodied the spirit of Ireland more than Dublin
or the big cities could. You couldn’t lay on your stomach
and look straight down a 300-foot drop in Dublin like you
could on the cliffs of Dun Aengus.”
While the group didn’t find any
four-leaf clovers or spot any leprechauns, it was clear that
SAU’s first Theatre in Ireland trip proved to be a success.
Another trip is planned for May, 2007.

KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP BRINGS NEW STUDENT
Last September, the SAU Theatre
Department produced a student/faculty/alumni production of
Arthur Miller’s classic, Death of a Salesman. After
the Friday night performance, Theatre Department Chair, Kris
Eitrheim announced the creation of the Michael Kennedy
Theatre Scholarship. This scholarship is named after
long-time SAU Theatre Professor, Mike Kennedy.
The scholarship was established by
several people who know Mr. Kennedy the best, including his
wife Darlene and fellow faculty member Dr. Corinne Johnson.
The scholarship will be presented annually to a first-year
student majoring in theatre at St. Ambrose.
Anyone who knows Mr. Kennedy knows that
he is one of a kind; which is exactly what the Theatre
Department was looking for in the scholarship winner. The
scholarship criteria are as follows:
*A diligent
work ethic
*A
truthfulness/honesty in his/her work and daily life
*A dedication
to his/her art
*A willingness
to be a productive and loyal member of a team/ensemble
*A sense of
humanity and civic responsibility
*The ability to
juggle classroom responsibilities and production demands
with success
and grace
*A great
appreciation for humor
Incoming Freshman Theatre Majors were
invited to apply for the Michael Kennedy Theatre Scholarship
in the spring of 2005. The St. Ambrose University Theatre
Department is proud to announce that the first recipient of
the Michael Kennedy Theatre Scholarship is Mr. Seth
Kaltwasser.
Seth Kaltwasser is a Freshman Theatre
Major (with a possible English Minor) from Osage, IA.
Kaltwasser has an older sister who attended SAU for two
years, and that’s when he first heard of the school and
theatre program.
Kaltwasser applied for the Kennedy
Scholarship as a way to put his name out there right away.
“It’s given me a bit of a head start around here,” he
explained humbly. Kaltwasser plans to acquire more
theatrical knowledge in his time at St. Ambrose. “I want to
become acquainted with all aspects of theatre,” he said.
What did Kaltwasser think when he first
met Michael Kennedy? “I don’t know him very well yet,” he
confessed, “but he seems like a great guy.” Kaltwasser
explained that he already admires Kennedy because he seems
so involved and knowledgeable. Kaltwasser and Kennedy will
become acquainted soon enough—Kaltwasser is enrolled in
Kennedy’s “Acting for the Camera” course this semester.
As for the Michael Kennedy Theatre
Scholarship itself, the funds are not quite as high as they
need to be. The Theatre Department urges SAU students,
faculty, alumni, and anyone who has known Michael Kennedy to
put aside the money you may spend on a Friday night pizza,
and instead, give it to the scholarship fund and bring a
very talented individual into the SAU Theatre Department.
To make a pledge to the Michael Kennedy Theatre Scholarship,
visit www.sau.edu/campaign/gift.htm and specify “Michael
Kennedy Scholarship.”
St. Ambrose congratulates Mr. Kennedy
on his many years of service to the school, and heartily
welcomes Seth Kaltwasser into the SAU Theatre family.

NEWSLETTER STILL IN NEED
A reminder goes out to all members of
the Freshman class that the SAU Theatre Newsletter is still
looking for a first-year student to be a contributing
journalist. You do not have to be a Theatre Major or Minor
to have this position, but an interest and involvement in
theatre is recommended.
“We are looking for someone who enjoys
theatre, enjoys writing, and is reliable and hard-working,”
says newsletter Editor Jenny Stodd. Stodd claims that
although writing a newsletter story each month is a
commitment, “it is a lot of fun, and not very time consuming
to be a contributing journalist.”
If you are interested in climbing on
board with the newsletter team, please see Dr. Cory Johnson
(newsletter faculty advisor, 333-6427) in her office (in the
Studio Theatre under the Allaert Auditorium stage) or e-mail
