A new face in security

Being safe is what St. Ambrose University strives for the most with their students.  Without safety, the whole system would collapse.  This is why security is such a fundamental part of St. Ambrose's operation, and why it is important to have the right person for the job.

“Nathan brings an energy to the depart and experience in the security field.” director of security Robert Christopher said about the new lead security officer Nathan Cox.  “He has a good understanding of the type of situations our students here would face.”

In January, Cox filled the role of the new lead security officer.  A current student at St. Ambrose and resident of Davenport, he is working towards his bachelor in criminal justice.

“There are a lot of jobs in the criminal justice field,” Cox said.  “Security works for me.”

Cox’s background features military service and previous security experience. From 1995 to 1998 Cox spent time in the Army doing Mechanized Infantry and before being offered the lead officer position, he worked a year at Genesis Hospital in security.

“Ambrose is community,” Cox said.  “At Genesis it was the complete opposite.”

Cox said the St. Ambrose community was a major appeal to him when applying for the position.  Compared to Genesis’ hectic atmosphere, Cox felt Ambrose’s laid back atmosphere would be a better working environment.

With school work the past three years, Cox has been limited with his free time.  However, he still finds time for running, lifting, reading and writing.

“I go through my phases in reading,” Cox said.  “I like anything involved with history, and military history is cool.  That’s something I picked up in the service because that’s all the books they had.”

After graduation Cox is planning to continue school to receive his masters degree.  However, he is anxious to experience other aspects of the criminal justice field.

“I would like to have a chance to get out there and have some of the oncology that comes with the other CJ [criminal justice] jobs,” Cox said.

During his time as a Lead Security Officer at SAU, Cox hopes to achieve as much interaction with the students as much as possible and to enjoy his time in school as much as he can.

“This environment is neat because it’s so goal oriented and people have their own plans, ideas and goals,” Cox said.  “I think it’s nice to interact with people who are on track to try and do something else because that’s what I’m trying to do too.”
