Nov. 18, 2004 Dinner: Kelly’s Pub Atmosphere: LISA: With shamrocks and beer everywhere, Kelly's Irish Pub depicts Irish lifestyles to the "T" The tinted windows on the outside of the pub make it look like a high-end restaurant. Luckily, it's a very casual dining experience -- considering we went in sweats. We sat ourselves in a booth, but they offer booths, tables and a bar top to eat or drink at. KATIE: I thought the atmosphere at Kelly’s couldn’t have been more college friendly. Even though Lisa and I were dressed down, we fit right in with the crowd. The pub itself is a nice intimate and somewhat smaller space. Most of the seating areas are separated from the bar, but the pub is brought together by the 13 plasma TVs, enough to have every game on at once. Food: LISA: The menu didn't have too many choices, so it was easy for me to decide on the club sandwich, which came with a side of my choice. We opted for an appetizer of wings, which were delivered in approximately four minutes. Mildly spiced and served with blue cheese dressing, they hit the spot. Before the wings could be devoured, our main course hit the table. My club was served on white bread, complete with tomato, lettuce, mayonnaise, turkey, ham and bacon. Combined with a salad, I was stuffed. KATIE: For Kelly’s, “A bar, with food," I didn’t have very high expectations. But I was pleasantly surprised. Even though the menu had little to offer in choices, the food was awesome! The wings were very good and you could taste the difference in their homemade sauce. For my entrée, being in the Irish spirit and all, I decided on the Rueben sandwich. I was shocked to see it out of the kitchen so fast, and how big it was! I’m used to a Rueben sandwich with thin sliced corned beef. This time, the corned beef was huge and a real piece of meat. I would easily say it was the best Rueben I’ve ever had. Pricing and people: Lisa: For $12.20 Kelly's offered a nice meal, almost as if it was homemade. The service was fast and friendly and the manager found time to stop and chat with us. KATIE: I agree with Lisa in saying the staff couldn’t have been more friendly or quick. It was the best service I’ve seen in awhile. The food was worth every penny of about 13 dollars, especially because of the bottomless drinks. Overall the entire restaurant was amazing and far exceeded my expectations. Cons: LISA: Other then the location being a bit far from campus on 53rd Street, our table hadn't been wiped down before we sat and there was a few crumbs scattered about. But, that was a small price to pay for the warm atmosphere and Irish spirit encompassing Kelly's. KATIE: My only complaint for the restaurant was the non-smoking section….or should I say lack there of. There wasn’t really an area for clean air, but other than that no complaints here! Lisa’s score: 3 out of 5 forks Katie’s score: 4 and ½ forks of 5 Movie: Alfie As we were deciding what movie we should view, we decided it due time for a chick flick. After seeing the previews for Alfie, we figured it would be the perfect viewing for our needs. Within the first half hour of the movie, we both realized our predictions were wrong. LISA: Alfie, played by the luscious Jude Law, narrated his account of love and loss thereof. Throughout the movie, he talked to the camera, which I found a bit odd and interesting. The movie -- complete with plenty of "adult scenes" -- showed Alfie's life, with a married women, his "girlfriend," another live-in "girlfriend," his best friends girlfriend and an older entrepreneur played by Susan Sarandon. Alfie told his views on the women and what he really thought of them -- it seemed as if he was living every man's fantasy -- until it all backfires. However, it seemed like a lecture. Although the trailer for Alfie offered little information about the movie's actual plot, the surprise wasn't a bad one -- and Jude Law more then made up for any downfalls the movie may have had. KATIE: The movie was nothing like I expected. Through out the whole movie Jude Law’s character reminds me of Ferris Bueller with his narration. If you’re not familiar with Ferris, perhaps a Zach Morris time out would give you a better idea of how he stopped to explain to the audience before and after his every move. All of those moves being him sleeping with a bunch of women and getting away with it for most of the time. The only reason I sat in the seat for the whole hour and 40 minutes was because of Jude Law. I wouldn’t recommend the movie to anyone. Not only is it not a good movie, it’s not even a good chick flick.
