Letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

Some one great once said never to doubt the power of small groups of people to change the world, in the end they are the only ones who can. We are in a time and place where we have that power if only we can come together as students and as Americans to make it our plan to help all those that we can.

Many may be thinking that for the next three years the Democrats may be a lost cause. It’s true that many of us were saddened after the election. More than a few of us even shed a few tears, but this should be the time we take that energy and turn it into something good. With the help of those that believe the same, we have that power and we ask that you merely take a stand for what you believe is right.

As the second semester draws closer to an end two things seem to be true. First, that the Democratic party suffered a setback after the November election and second, that Saint Ambrose University is not a politically active campus. There are severely unjust public policies in our society today and there are brave individuals working day and night to overcome them. The quest for a Democratic president in 2008 began on Wednesday, November 3, 2004.

We aren’t asking for a lifetime commitment and major monetary contribution; we simply ask that you give a small portion of your time to a worthy cause. Whether it is by organizing a community event, writing a letter to the editor, or simply starting a meaningful conversation with a friend, your time and effort can make a positive impact on this campus, city and country. Those active in politics vary in their views yet respect the need to let all opinions be heard.

The SAU Democrats as an organization are very fortunate to the have the support of both local and national organizations including St. Ambrose University Student Government Association, College Democrats of America, and Democracy for America. Yet, we feel that we are in someway letting those organizations down in not becoming a premiere organization on this campus. We have desperately tried to “wake up” both those who consider themselves Democrats, Republicans, and everything in between, but the response has been lukewarm at best.

Many say that we are currently in the prime of our lives. We just completed what many view as the most important election of our lifetime. Did you make a difference? While not all of us will make politics or governmental procedures their life’s work, we are all affected by the decisions that our elected representatives and leaders make, and the average American can make these issues priorities in their life.

We hope that this letter serves as a reminder to those who sometimes take freedom and liberty for granted. We are very privileged to have the ability to speak out on issues in our world yet few choose to do so.

Sincerely,

Amanda Elkins, President of SAU Democrats
Caciona Reece, Vice President of SAU Democrats
