Feb. 10, 2005 While Valentine’s Day is generally designated as a day for lovers, at St, Ambrose, it will be a day for heroes too. In an effort to raise money for the American Red Cross of the Quad City area, the Davenport Breakfast Lions Club is partnering with Sodexho in a “Heroes for the American Red Cross” campaign. From 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 14, a table will be set up in the Rogalski Center accepting donations for the local Red Cross chapter. A $1.00 donation will allow each donor a beverage of his or her choice, free, from the food court area. Each donor will also receive a card that says, “I’m a hero,” which will be placed on a large banner in the café. “This is an important day for all of us,” marketing professor and club president Craig Shoemaker said. “It’s wonderful that we can celebrate such an occasion in a beautiful facility.” The goal for the event is to have 1,000 heroes on the banner, and the campaign will help to raise part of the $65,000 goal. “We also want to create awareness to students of the work of the Red Cross, so as students get older, they may help the organization as well,” Shoemaker said. The Lions Club is the world’s largest volunteer club, and has over 1.4 million members worldwide. “The Lions Club is dedicated to supporting local communities and community service, wherever Lions are throughout the world,” Shoemaker said. The Davenport Breakfast Lions Club meets on campus in the faculty dining room every first and third Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. In addition to holding the meetings on campus, several members of the St. Ambrose community belong to the club. Current members include Ron Wastyn, Bill Lynn, Craig Shoemaker, Mike Orfetelli, Bill Hitchings and Steve Ahrens. |
