For the 2005 fall semester, a new dorm will be available for student housing.  “New Hall ’05” is currently being built between the bookstore and O’Keefe Library.  The building’s official name will be announced at a later date.

New Hall ’05 will consist of 202 beds, arranged in suite-style living, and be very similar in structure to Bechtel Hall.  Two people will live in each room, and every two rooms will share a bathroom, which will be in-between the two bedrooms.  The hall will consist of four floors, living on the first and third floor, and women living on second and fourth floors.

“The project is on schedule,” Matt Hansen, director of residence life said.  “I have confidence that the job will get done.”  Recently, steel beams went up.  Russell Construction is in charge of the construction of the building, and Russell also built Bechtel Hall.  The new building is even using the same project manager that was used with Bechtel.

New Hall ’05 is being considered traditional housing, which is available for freshman and sophomores.

Currently, there are 1,200 students living on campus.  This past fall that number was at 1,275, but numbers usually drop for the spring semester.

“For the fall of 2003, we had about 1,100 students.  This shows that Ambrose has grown fast and will continue growing,’ Hansen said.  “We expect over 1,400 students living on campus for the fall of 2005.”

New Hall ’05, which is a seven million dollar building, is funded by a bond.  According to Hansen, St. Ambrose took out a bank loan to pay for the building.  However, the building will pay for itself quickly, since students will be paying for housing in the future, and freshman housing applications are already being accepted.
