Feb. 24, 2005 Everyone knows that St. Ambrose offers a wide variety of liberal arts activities including theatre, choir, art exhibits, and band. But something students may not know, is that St. Ambrose also offers students the opportunity to publish their writings in a campus-based literary magazine called Quercus. Quercus has been published on campus for over a decade and includes such writings as short stories, fiction and poetry, as well as student artwork and photography. The magazine is open to all students, faculty, staff and alumni, and receives anywhere from 50 to 100 submissions a year. All submissions must be emailed or delivered to Carl Herzig, an English professor located on the third floor of Ambrose Hall, by March 1. The pieces are then reviewed by a staff of student editors and selected for publication. All of the pieces are presented to the editors anonymously so everyone has an equal chance of being selected. “We want to present the best of what the community has to offer,” Herzig said. “You don’t have to be on staff to be selected. Everyone can become involved in this project.” After selecting which pieces will be published, students organize and layout the design before sending it to a local publisher for the final production. Over 1,000 copies are published each year and distributed around campus at the end of the spring semester. “This is an opportunity to look at your writing in a different way, and that is a positive thing for any writer,” Herzig said. Copies of Quercus are also placed throughout the Quad Cities in an effort to get the community involved in the activities going on at St. Ambrose. |
