April 7, 2005 Career fairs offer many opportunities to students looking for an internship or to new graduates searching for a job. “They have internships that they’re hiring for as well as full-time positions,” said Jennifer Timmons, director of the career center. “There aren’t many opportunities that you’re going to have this many employers in one location to get your resumes out to.” There were over 57 employers that attended the Ambrose/Augastana career fair held in the Rogalski Center. “Networking is key so starting young in that first
year or second year, meeting the employers and getting to know them, is
very important,” said Timmons. “It’s nice to be able to see how you can get your feet wet even if it’s just for an internship,” said the senior. “Just to see what you want to do or what you’re interested in or even what’s out there.” Timmons said that it’s a good idea to keep up on who’s coming to career fairs and what they’re hiring for so you can be prepared. Also, dress professionally as if you were actually going to their organization. Men should wear a suit with a jacket and women should wear a suit too, either with a skirt or pants. There is also an accounting career fair that will be held in October, since accounting typically hires then. St. Ambrose has their general career fair in the spring and Augastana will host one in the fall. Timmons said they are talking about having individual career fairs for health sciences and other areas too. |
