After four years of rolling out of bed for class, café food and memorable experiences, the seniors are ready for the real world. But, before they make there last trek through campus, SAU wants to build a lasting relationship through the senior challenge.

A tradition at SAU, the challenge encourages seniors to contribute a donation during their senior year or shortly thereafter. This year, the goal is to raise $1,000 or have 50% participation. Neither of the goals have been met yet, but are anticipated to be met before graduation.

Megan Gisi, assistant director of alumni and parent relations, encourages seniors to join this "proud legacy of support.”

“Without alumni support SAU wouldn't be able to offer the environment that makes it so special, such as personal attention to students, state of the art facilities and amenities and superb faculty," Gisi said.

Last year's goal of $1000 was met. In May, each student who donated last year will receive a letter asking for suggestions to determine the class gift. The letters go out one year after graduation to ensure everyone has time to donate. Based on the suggestions, a gift in honor of the class of 2004 will be given to the university around Homecoming 2006.

Senior Stella O'Rourke and junior Natalie Sacco, co-presidents of the Student Alumni Association, are heading this fundraising effort.

"It's a great way to kick off a tradition of supporting your alma mater," O'Rourke said. "A lot of people get upset because they've just paid graduation fees and tuition, which is understandable. But, the challenge goes toward a good cause - especially if it's for a scholarship."

Gifts can be given in various ways, said O'Rourke. The donation can be given in one amount or divided over time. Since senior year can drain bank accounts, students have the option to pay before graduation, or six to nine months after. As a bonus, students who donate before graduation receive a senior challenge t-shirt.

After graduation, alumni are encouraged to remain connected to SAU through financial support and activities such as Homecoming, the wine festival, Ambrose After Hours and sporting events.
