On March 15 students in Tiedemann, Hagen and Bechtel halls woke up without any water. A semi truck delivering building materials to the new dorm construction site hit the fire hydrant on the corner of Ripley Street and Pleasant Street.

“I am surprised the hydrant had not been hit before, it was practically sticking out into the street,” Jim Hannon said.

To make the situation worse, the shut-off valve was frozen and workers had to replace the valve as well as the hydrant.

The delivery truck hit the hydrant around 8 a.m. and students did not have water back until later in the afternoon. The water to some buildings had to be shut off in order to make repairs.

“It was not that big of an inconvenience, I’m just glad I was not taking a shower when it happened,” said Kyle Cratty, a resident in Tiedemann.

“I started to brush my teeth and the faucet started spitting at me, so I decided to chew some gum,” said Andy Koch, another Tiedemann resident.

To ensure that this situation would not happen again, the new fire hydrant was moved farther away from the street.
