Oct. 21, 2004 The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center was out for blood Sept. 30th. About 45 volunteers donated blood at the annual St. Ambrose University Campus Activities Board (CAB)-sponsored blood drive. Jane Duax, MVRBC Donor Recruiter says that the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center’s main goal is to provide quality blood products through voluntary donors and be able to meet the needs of the hospitals in our communities. “Without the blood, all the modern medicine in the world won’t make any difference for people that need blood during the course of surgery,” Duax says. This is the 25th year that the MVRBC has been coming to SAU. Duax says they like coming to SAU because most students have an open mind and are willing to get involved in community activities. “Over the years we’ve collected 3,267 units of blood [at SAU],” Duax says. Jennifer Lutz, a SAU student volunteer, says she likes to donate blood despite the fact that she hates needles. “I just feel really good donating, knowing that I’m helping people in the community,” Lutz said. Teamwork has played a role in the success of the MVRBC as they are the sole provider of blood to all the local hospitals. “The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center actually serves 41 hospitals in 34 counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois and then the southern tip of Wisconsin.” Duax says. Every three seconds someone in the United States needs a pint of blood. The MVRBC is a community blood center that meets the needs of its region first but also participates in a program of recognized sharing through a network of independent blood centers. |
