Strawberry shortcake and dirt‘n worms might not be normal tailgating food at some colleges, but to SAU, Homecoming wouldn’t be complete without them.

The annual Taste of Ambrose brought out many faces on Saturday at Brady Street Stadium.  Set up outside the football field, hundreds of students, alumni, parents, faculty and fans lined up to get tickets to purchase the food.

Since SAU students on a meal plan could substitute campus eating for tickets to spend at the taste, many parents followed suit.

“It’s such a nice party atmosphere,” said Mary Alice Parker, whose son, Steven plays on the football team. Her and her husband, Steve, traveled to Davenport for the Homecoming festivities from their Chicago suburb home.

“The weather is a little better then last year,” said Steve.  “It’s a better crowd.”

The crowds could pick from over ten different clubs and organizations that sold food.  Each club could then specially request a different food item to sell, provided by Sodexho.  Although the clubs do not directly benefit monetarily from the taste, many believe the interactions with other Ambrosians are worth it.

“The thing is we’re trying to give back to the community,” said Stella O’Rourke, co-president of the Student Alumni Association.  “Plus it’s really fun and another way to get our name out there.”

Many, including Bobbi Rogalski, believe that the Ambrose tradition is something that many look forward to each fall.

“It’s the highlight of Homecoming every year,” said Rogalski.

Some of the other food items included pretzels and cheese, burgers and brats, and walking tacos.
