With a voice like Sarah McLachlan and her ultra-modern acoustic sound, Tamara Bedricky, 25, entered the music scene in 2002 after she made the top five finalists in the Pantene Pro-Voice, a national competition that showcases rising female artists.

“It’s one of those things that I’m never a lucky person and I never win anything so I was really surprised that I made the top five,” Bedricky said.

Her nominated song, “A Million Miles” was picked out of more than 2,000 entries for the annual competition.

“‘A Million Miles’ will always be a special song of mine because it was that song that got me where I am today,” said Bedricky.

Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Bedricky, a daughter of a military father, was relocated often during her childhood, but kept music as a constant in her life.

“I never adjusted well to moving and my music helped me through my struggles,” said Bedricky.

Tamara began playing the guitar when she was 15 and took lessons for two years.  Later, she continued to teach herself.

“Electromagnetic forces drew me to the guitar more than any other instrument,” said Bedricky.

With the current release of her album, “Through These Eyes,” Tamara has been traveling to college campuses, such as St. Ambrose and Augustana, promoting herself as well as her album.

“I’ve been lucky with the colleges that I have been playing at and the good people on the committees made it even better when I play there,” said Bedricky.

Only about 20 people attended the concert, but many of the students were impressed with Tamara’s talent.

“Tamara is a strong songwriter and she was able to connect with the audience on a more personal level,” SAU student Anthony Lonconsole said.

During her performance at SAU, she told the audience how and why she wrote each song performed. Most of the songs she performed are fueled by an array of emotions related to heartache, love, life and detachment. Tamara was inspired to develop her own melodies and lyrics by the influences of Sarah McLachlan, Sting, and Sheryl Crow.

Bedricky has high expectations for herself. She has been working hard by doing all her own promotions. While this is tiring work in addition to singing and writing, Bedricky is sure performing is part of her future.

“Hopefully I can get to the next level where I can be with a label and they actually put their energy behind me and push me so I can get out there and play bigger acts with bigger audiences,” said Bedricky.
