Nov. 4, 2004 The Ambrosian of the Month for October was awarded to Dr. Nancy Hayes. Hayes is an assistant professor of English and is a representative to the Education Department. She joined the St. Ambrose community in August 2001. Hayes, a self-proclaimed “original Davenporter” graduated from Central High school and went on to college on the East coast. She found happiness at Smith College in Massachusetts and then went on to get her MA in English at the University of Connecticut. Following her time at the university she moved to Germany where she lived for nine years. Once she returned, she went back to school at U of I, first getting an MFA translating medieval German love songs, and then after about 15 years, she received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature, specializing in Renaissance and Medieval English and German Lit. She now shares her life with her husband and their three children. Hayes is involved in many groups; some include the Plagiarism Task Force, the Quad City Sports Center board, the art museum foundation board, the Davenport Schools foundation board, and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association board. However, with all of her activities, she still finds time to spread her positive energy and enthusiasm in all that she does at SAU. “I was absolutely thrilled with being chosen to get that coveted parking spot on campus," Hayes said. "I really was shocked and humbled. To me this award is the one I am most proud of." Hayes is thankful for her award and the wonderful people that she has met since working at St. Ambrose. |
