Nov. 4, 2004 The lights dimmed in the Galvin Fine Arts Center, as the figure of a full moon appeared in the upper right of the black walls. Below the moon crouched Kun-Yang Lin, a native of Taiwan, who came to America in 1994 to dance professionally. After Lin's opening solo set titled Moon Dance, the members of his troupe, first one, then two by two, took the stage. The dancers’ performances ranged from Asian dance and music score, to modern movements set to a more contemporary score. The troupe is composed of 12 dancers; four men and eight women. Nine of the dancers are from all over the United States, while the other three are from Taiwan. In most company performances, eight members perform at each show. Most of the troupe's performances are in the New York City area, and other parts of the Northeast. They have also performed in countries such as Russia and Indonesia. The Galvin Fine Arts Center appearance was the only appearance, this year, for the dance troupe in the Midwest. After years as a dancer and choreographer, Lin formed his self-named dance troupe, for which he serves as artistic director. He also holds the position of assistant professor of dance at Temple University in Philadelphia. |
