Dec. 9, 2004 As new graduates prepare for winter commencement, the university continues its tradition of having speakers inspire St Ambrose University’s newest alumni. Linda Nueman, the first woman to serve on the Iowa Supreme Court will speak at the commencement ceremony. Her contributions to the community include leadership roles at Royal Neighbors of America, servingas an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa School of Law, and as a trustee of St. Ambrose University. The Des Moines Register and the Quad City Times did feature articles this past summer about Nueman's inclusion in the local rock band the BureauCats. The Register's article featured a picture of Newman behind the microphone, holding her electric guitar, talking to the crowd between sets. Newman serves as a role model for professional and academic accomplishments. Born in Chicago and raised in Denver, Nueman earned her undergraduate and law degree from the University of Colorado, and her masters degree in law from the University of Virginia. Nueman practiced law in Davenport before she served as a Scott County Magistrate. She was appointed a district court judge for the Seventh Judicial District in 1982. She became the first female justice of the Iowa Supreme Court in 1986, where she served until her retirement in 2003. |
