Pacem in Terris
Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award given by the Pacem in Terris Coalition, honors Pope John XXIII and commemorates his 1963 encyclical letter, Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), which called on all people to secure peace among all nations.

The award was created in 1964 by the Davenport Catholic Interracial Council and has been presented by the Quad Cities Pacem in Terris Coalition since 1976.

As of November 2007, there have been 39 recipients since the first was given posthumously to John F. Kennedy in 1964.

Two previous recipients, Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, and Mother Teresa, who committed her life to rooting out poverty, are being canonized. Six recipients -- Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Adolfo Perez Esquivel and Lech Walesa -- also received the Nobel Peace Prize.
