Gunawan signs, will vault and run for Bees

The St. Ambrose Track and Field team is proud to announce the signing of one of the state’s best pole vaulters. Bureau Valley’s Lauren Gunawan finished in the top 20 at the IHSA Track and Field Championships last season after capturing the sectional crown. She was also a four-year letter winner on the cross country team and helped the Storm to a third place finish her sophomore season.

As a prep at BV, Gunawan has vaulted a personal best of 9-feet, and has played an instrumental role on various relay teams.

The Bee women have won six Midwest Classic Conference Championships since 1994, and SAU women have won the pole vault championship five of the seven years it has been contested.

“Having Lauren on our team really helps us out,” St. Ambrose pole vault coach Dan Tomlin said. “She really brings a lot to the table for us in the vault and in middle distance events. Lauren is a hard-working girl that we know will give 100-percent to the program and those are the type of athletes that will help us win championships.

This past summer, Gunawan participated in the Down Under games in Austrailia as a member of the cross country team representing the State of Illinois, finishing 17th out of 89, and coming in as the second Land of Lincoln runner.

The Bee women have finished runner-up in the Midwest Classic Conference each of the last three seasons.
