Queen Bees split in Jim Fox Invitational

DAVENPORT, Iowa—

New Head Coach Nathan Altenhofen recorded his first win and his first loss as the Queen Bees went 1-1 in the Jim Fox Invitational.

The Queen Bees opened the season with one of the largest margins of victory (72) in school history by defeating Trinity International 109-37. The largest margin of victory is currently 84 points, set by the 1994 squad against Mount St. Clare.

The Queen Bees got off to a furious start with a 17-3 run to open the game. Whitney Rumbold knocked down two jumpers and two free throws while Casey Breitbach hit two three pointers in the game's first five minutes to spark the run.

Taking a 48-15 lead into the half, the Queen bees forced 19 Trojan turnovers.

The second half was an all too familiar story for the Trojans as St. Ambrose kept the pressure on with its trapping 2-3 zone. St. Ambrose forced another 20 turnovers in the second half and 39 for the game. The Queen bees finished with just 11 turnovers and 24 assists as a team.

Leading the way for the Bees was Casey Breitbach, who ended with a game-high 25 points on 8-16 shooting, including knocking down 7-14 from beyond the arc. Amy Fulfs added 17 points and Whitney Rumbold added 15 as well. Three other Queen Bees scored in double digits as SAU connected on 36 of their 80 field goal attempts.

On Saturday, the Queen Bees faced a much tougher foe as they hosted Morningside College and eventually fell 76-65. The pace of the game was much slower as Morningside was able to protect the ball against the Bees aggressive defense.

Forcing 25 less turnovers than the night before, the Queen Bees were unable to push the tempo of the game and Morningside dominated on the boards with a 49-34 edge.

Dani Gass had a double-double for Morningside with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jenny Clark had a solid game for the Queen Bees as she scored 14 points, had 5 assists and recorded 4 rebounds. Ali Dolphin dropped in 13 points and had 5 assists as well.

With the loss, the Queen Bees dropped to 1-1 on the season. They will be back in action on November 9th for a non-conference match-up with Illinois-Springfield.
