Queen Bees win River Cities Classic
Clinton, Iowa—
The St. Ambrose Queen Bees won the River Cities Classic by blowing out Purdue
Calumet 104-69 and Illinois Institute of Technology 87-41.
On Friday, Purdue Calumet hung with the Queen Bees for about 5 minutes before
the speed and athleticism of St. Ambrose took over. Up 11-9 with 14:43 remaining
in the first half, closes the first half by outscoring Purdue Calumet 46-14 over
the final 15 minutes of the first half.
The Queen bees shot a sizzling 58.8% from the field and connected on 8-11
(72.7%) threes before intermission.
Building a 34 point at the break, Purdue College played the Queen Bees virtually
even in the second half as St. Ambrose cooled off only slightly. SAU still hit
50% from the field in the second half, but connected on only 5-13 three point
attempts in the second period.
The Bees defense held Purdue to just 8 field goals in the first half, but gave
up 15 field goals and 42 points in the second half.
Jenny Clark was absolutely outstanding for St. Ambrose as she broke her
career-mark in scoring by recording 28 points on 11-13 shooting from the field,
including 6-7 from behind the arc. Clark missed a triple double by three
rebounds and two assists as she finished the game with 28 points, nine rebounds
and eight assists.
Ali Dolphin just missed a double-double as she scored 20 points and had 9
rebounds. Six of Dolphin's nine rebounds were offensive and she almost had seven
assists in the game.
On Saturday, the Queen Bees picked up where they left off by dismantling
Illinois Institute of Technology 87-41. The Queen Bees forced 34 IIT turnovers
and recorded 30 assists.
Despite only shooting 44.9% from the field, the Queen Bees used stellar defense
to push the game way out of reach. SAU finished with 21 steals and held IIT to
just 16-52 shooting from the field.
Once again, the Bees found scoring in a variet of places as Casey Breitbach set
her career high in points with 29. Connecting on 10-16 shots from the field and
8-12 from behind the three point line, Breitbach set the school mark for most
three pointers in a game with eight.
Jenny Clark finished close behind Breitbach with 22 points while connecting on
6-8 from beyond the arc. She Clark also had eight assists, five rebounds and
four steals in the contest.
With the onslaught of three pointers, the Queen Bees broke the previous mark of
14 three pointers made, which they set earlier this season against
Illinois-Springfield. The Queen Bees also shattered the mark for most three
pointers attempted in a game (29), set against Teikyo-Marycrest in 2002 by
attempting 38 in this contest.
With the wins, the Queen Bees jump to 7-1 on the season. They will head to
Clinton, Iowa on November 27th to take on Ashford University in their second
conference game.
