SAU struggles, finds way to win
DECORAH, Iowa—
Despite only shooting 31.4% from the field, the Queen Bees forced 31 turnovers
and converted 26 points off turnovers in their 64-56 win over Luther College.
Since the Queen Bees were not able to get a rhythm going offensively, they
looked to their defense to shut down Luther. With pressure defense and a
tenacious trapping zone, St. Ambrose had 21 steals that led directly to 26
points.
Junior Casey Breitbach also answered when the Queen Bees could not hit a shot
from the floor. Breitbach tied her career high with 29 points and tied her own
school record by knocking down eight three pointers in just 11 attempts.
Shooting 11-17 from the field from the game, Breitbach was the lone offensive
bright spot. Her teammates combined to hit just 12-53 from the field.
Jenny Clark and Ali Dolphin combined to hit only nine of thirty three between
them. The duo did however force several turnovers and combined to have nine
steals between them.
Even with the poor shooting, the Queen Bees outmatched Luther early in the first
half and jumped out to a quick six point lead just five minutes into the game.
Dara Widdop knocked in 1 of 2 free throws to give SAU a 41-29 before the break.
In the second half, the Queen Bees were never really threatened as the closest
Luther came to challenging them was six points with 43 seconds left to play.
Whitney Rumbold and Casey breitbach each hit a single free throw in the waning
seconds to extend the lead to eight points.
Winners of nine in a row, the Queen Bees will have some much deserved time off.
They will head to North Miami, Florida to take on Johnson & Wales on December
17th in non-conference action.
