Dec. 10, 2008

Van Gieson capped an outstanding season by earning All-American honorable
mention, the NAIA today. Three teams and an honorable mention list are selected
by the NAIA Women's Soccer All-America Selection Committee.
Van Gieson led St. Ambrose with 8 goals and 20 total points. The senior

Earlier, Van Gieson was one of three Queen Bees named to the All-Midwest

Season Ends in NAIA National Championship Opening Round
Nov. 22, 2008
Kelsey Carroll scored a goal but it wasn't enough as St. Ambrose saw its
season come to an end with a 5-1 loss at Concordia (Ore.) in the NAIA National
Championship Opening Round.
Concordia scored three goals in the first half and added two more in the
second before SAU got on the board. In the 89th minute, Carroll got the ball
after a scramble in front of the net and buried her shot in the upper right
corner of the net. The unassisted goal was her fourth of the season.
The Queen Bees had other chances but could not convert. Early in the match,
SAU pushed the ball up the field on a counter-attack. The ensuing scuffle in
front of the net was eventually cleared by the CU defense.
Just minutes before Carroll's goal, Nikki Boland fired a great corner kick
into the box, but the CU goalkeeper jumped out and caught it in mid-air.
Erica Inendino made seven saves in the loss.
The Bees end the season with a 9-9-3 record.
Mannall MCC Coach of the Year; Five Earn All-MCC
Nov. 19, 2008
After
qualifying for the NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship for the first time
in school history, five Queen Bee soccer players were named to the
all-conference team while head coach Jon Mannall was recognized by his peers as
the league's Coach of the Year as announced by the Midwest Collegiate Conference
on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
Mannall has now won the yearly coaching honor in back-to-back seasons. In his
sixth year at the helm of the Queen Bees, Mannall led his team to a 7-1 MCC
record and the MCC regular season and tournament titles and its first-ever berth
to the NAIA National Championship.
“This is tremendous recognition for the work Coach Mannall has done," said
SAU athletic director Ray Shovlain. "It is great that the other coaches in the
conference have recognized him and our entire women’s soccer program. We are
extremely excited that our women’s soccer team has won back-to-back conference
titles and are headed to the National Tournament this year.”
Mannall's job was made easier by having three first team all-conference
selections and two honorable mention picks on the roster.
Earning first team all-MCC honors were junior defender/midfielder Sam Cohen,
senior defender Krysta Schmitt and senior forward Shelby Van Gieson.
Cohen, from Dunlap, Ill. (Notre Dame),
shared the team lead with four assists in conference games in 2008. She was
second on the team with four goals and finished with 12 total points.

into a penalty kick shootout. SAU advanced on PKs 3-2.
Inendino made three saves in the match before turning away 3-of-5 PKs she
faced. Cohen slipped what proved to be the game-winning goal past the Grand View

Women's Soccer National Championship on Saturday, Nov. 22. Kickoff is scheduled

season 19-0-1 overall and won the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season
and conference tournament championships. The Cavaliers, seeded fifth, are making
their eighth straight national tournament appearance.
St. Ambrose does enter the tournament on a bit of a roll. The Bees rebounded
from a slow start that saw the team lose its first six matches of the season.
Since that point, the team went 9-2-3 the rest of the way, including a 7-1 mark
in the MCC to win the regular-season conference title.
After a 6-0 win over Iowa Wesleyan in the MCC Tournament quarterfinals, SAU
earned a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Clarke in the tournament semifinals.

national tournament by defeating Grand View 3-2 in a penalty-kick shootout after
a 0-0 tie through two overtimes.
"It is a great feeling for all involved in the program," said SAU head coach
Jon Mannall. "After a tough beginning to the year, it took some great leadership
from our upperclassman, especially our seniors, to create the belief within the
program that we could turn it around. The win over Grand View really capped off
that feeling and proved that all the hard work has paid off."

Bees the advantage. The Vikings fourth shooter, McKenzie McAdaragh, slid a shot
just outside the left post. After Shelby Van Gieson's potential game-winning PK
was stopped by Jorie Shields-Smith, Autumn Stephens, Grand View's final shooter,
fired a shot off the crossbar to give the Bees the MCC title.
