Video highlights, courtesy TV-11 St. Ambrose capped a perfect season against Midwest Collegiate Conference foes by defeating Viterbo 3-1 Saturday night in the league's tournament championship match in front of an energetic crowd in Lee Lohman Arena. With the win, the Queen Bees clinch a berth in the NAIA National Championships which start Saturday, Nov. 21. SAU is 34-7 overall and won all 12 matches against MCC opponents this year. Nothing came easy Saturday against a valiant Viterbo (31-11) squad. The V-Hawks dominated the first set 25-18 before the Queen Bees rallied to win the final three sets, by scores of 25-21, 26-24, 25-16. "This was the kind of play you expect in a championship match," said SAU head coach Bruce Billingsley. "Both teams had scoring runs and opportunities to win. I'm excited that we were able to dig down and pull it out. This was a real team effort - 12 players played in this match and all 12 were criticial to our success." With the match knotted at one set each, Viterbo led as late as 23-20 in the third set. But four straight SAU points put the Bees in front and Megan Macyauski's kill gave the Bees the set 26-24 and a 2-1 lead. St. Ambrose left little doubt in the fourth set, taking a 12-5 lead before winning the final six points of the match to close out Viterbo 25-16. Amy Royer led all players with 17 kills. Kait Gallagher had 13 and Catherine Wildner added 11 in the win. Lauren Aderman paced the Bees with 32 assists. Now the Bees must wait until Sunday night to see where they will begin play in the 36-team national tournament. Bees Advance to MCC Tournament ChampionshipNov. 11, 2009 Video highlights, courtesy TV-11 For the third time this season, St. Ambrose defeated Ashford. But this victory meant a little more than the previous two. SAU's 3-1 win over Ashford sends the Bees into the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament championship match Saturday night. Set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 15-25, 25-21. St. Ambrose (33-7) came charging out of the gate, racing to an 11-2 lead in the opening set thanks to two kills each from Kait Gallagher and Catherine Wildner. Ashford (22-18) made a late charge before falling 25-20. The second set was knotted at 6-6 before SAU won nine of the next 11 points for a 15-8 lead. The Bees closed the set 25-18. Ashford fought back in the third set and led throughout, posting a 25-15 win. The fourth set was similar to the third as the Saints led by as many as 15-11. But the Bees proved why they were the MCC regular season champs by reeling off five straight points and nine of the next 10 to grab a 20-16 lead. Amy Royer finished an outstanding effort with her 18th kill of the match on match point to claim victory for the Bees. Royer had only one attack error in 35 attempts to finish with a .486 attack percentage. Gallagher also reached double figures, finishing with 10 kills. Catherine Wildner finished with nine. SAU Begins MCC Tournament with WinNov. 7, 2009 St. Ambrose opened Midwest Collegiate Conference championship tournament play with a 3-1 win over Waldorf Saturday night in Lee Lohman Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-19. The Bees led throughout the majority of the first two sets before stumbling in the third. After falling behind 1-0 in the fourth, SAU raced to an 8-3 lead and led by as much as 20-11 before coasting to the win. Megan O'Shea led the team with 14 kills and five total blocks. Amy Royer had 12 and Kait Gallagher added 11. Lauren Aderman paced the team with 33 assists while Megan Gordon finished with 14. Jackie DalCerro (13), Catherine Wildner (12) and Dolores Wildner (10) each reached double figures in digs. St. Ambrose (32-7 overall) will next host a tournament semifinal match against Ashford Wednesday at 7 p.m. With a win, the Bees would host the conference championship next Saturday night. Aderman (pictured, top), a senior from Chicago, Ill., averaged 8.19 assists per game over five matches as St. Ambrose went 4-1 last week. Included was a victory over Clarke to wrap up a perfect record in the MCC regular season and a win over Carthage, the #9 team in NCAA Division III. This season, Aderman has played in all 136 sets over 37 matches. She leads the team with 971 assists and has surpassed 3,000 career assists to break the St. Ambrose career school record. She also leads the Bees with 50 service aces.
Helping SAU to a 30-7 record and the MCC regular season title, O'Shea leads the team with a .374 attack percentage and is third on the team with 295 kills. O'Shea also leads the team with 96 total blocks. Earlier this season, she set the St. Ambrose school record for career blocks. She has more than 400 in her time at SAU. The Bees will close the regular season at home Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. match against Dubuque. SAU will have home-court advantage throughout the MCC championship tournament, which starts with quarterfinal matchups on Saturday. SAU Wins Three-of-Four at UW-Whitewater TournamentOct. 31, 2009 St. Ambrose won three matches, including a 3-1 win over Carthage, the #9-ranked NCAA Division III team, at a tournament hosted by UW-Whitewater Friday and Saturday. However, the Bees also saw their 13-match winning streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Lakeland. SAU was one of just three teams to finish 3-1 at the two-day event. St. Ambrose is now 30-7 overall. SAU, 27-6 overall, led almost wire-to-wire in capping an undefeated 8-0 conference season. The Bees trailed in the opening stages of the first and third sets before posting a 25-17, 25-23, 25-18 win over the Crusaders. "The conference is very balanced from top to bottom so to go undefeated throughout the conference means a lot," said SAU head coach Bruce Billingsley, who won his eighth conference title with the Bees. "I'm especially excited for this year's seniors, who earned their third MCC title and have been great leaders. Now we're anxious to host the conference playoffs." As they have all season, the three seniors came up big for the Bees. Kait Gallagher shared team-high honors with nine kills, Megan O'Shea added six kills and four blocks and Lauren Aderman recorded a match-best 24 assists. St. Ambrose will take a 12-match winning streak into a two-day tournament at UW-Whitewater this weekend. The Bees will host Dubuque on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for Parents' Night before the MCC Tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 7. The conference semifinals are scheduled for Nov. 11 and the championship match is slated for Nov. 14. Heading into the final week of the regular season, the top four seeds are set. Following St. Ambrose in order are Grand View (6-1 MCC), Viterbo (5-2) and Ashford (4-3). Clarke (0-7) will finish ninth and have to open the MCC Championships with a play-in match on the road. Iowa Wesleyan (3-4), William Penn (2-5), Mount Mercy (2-5) and Waldorf (2-5) are battling for the 5-8 spots, which will be determined after Monday's matches. The 5-8 senior setter from Chicago, Ill., surpassed the 3,000 career assist mark in a win over Saint Xavier on Oct. 15 before setting the SAU mark in a win at Viterbo on Oct. 21. Following a pair of wins on Saturday, Aderman has handed out 3,195 assists in a Queen Bee uniform. She broke the previous record of 3,131 assists set by Becky Fetter from 2004-06. Aderman has recorded 799 assists through 32 matches this season. She has helped lead the Bees to a 26-6 mark. Bees Finish 2-0 at Fall ClassicOct. 24, 2009 St. Ambrose improved to 26-6 overall after winning both matches at the Fall Classic Saturday. The Bees defeated McKendree 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23) before getting past Ashford 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-18) in a non-conference match. It didn't look promising for SAU early as McKendree won the first set and took a 7-2 lead in the second. The Bees won four straight points to get back in the set before finally catching McKendree at 15-15. With the set knotted at 21-21, SAU won four straight points, the final two points on service aces from Megan Gordon, to win the second set. The third set wasn't as dramatic as the Bees raced to a 9-3 lead before taking the 25-18 win. The final set went back and forth before SAU prevailed 25-23. Kait Gallagher (15), Catherine Wildner (14) and Amy Royer (11) each reached double figures in kills. Megan O'Shea and Tori Matzen each added eight. Lauren Aderman finished with a match-best 39 assists while Gordon had 14. Jackie DalCerro paced the team with 20 digs. Against Ashford, St. Ambrose never trailed in taking the first two sets 25-17 and 25-11. The third set was a different story as the Saints grabbed an 8-2 lead. But SAU rolled off 11 straight points, thanks to two kills each from Tori Matzen and Kait Gallagher, to take a 13-8 lead en route to the 25-18 win. Catherine Wildner led the team with 11 kills and 15 digs. Matzen had nine, Royer and Gallagher each added eight and O'Shea finished with seven. Aderman (23) and Gordon (13) combined for 36 of the team's 43 assists. DalCerro finished with 14 digs. In the day's other match, McKendree defeated Ashford 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22). St. Ambrose will look to complete an undefeated conference regular season Wednesday at 7:30 against Clarke. A win would give the Bees the outright MCC regular season championship. SAU Guaranteed Share of MCC Regular Season TitleOct. 21, 2009 St. Ambrose has guaranteed itself at least a share of the Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season volleyball championship following a 3-0 win at Viterbo Wednesday night. Set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 25-21. With one MCC match remaining, the Bees are a perfect 7-0 in league play and have a one-game lead on Grand View (6-1 MCC). SAU, 24-6 overall, knocked off a Viterbo team that entered the night with only one conference loss. After falling behind 11-7 in the first set, the Bees won 10-of-11 points to take a 17-12 lead before cruising to the 25-16 win. SAU won seven straight points in the middle of the second set, two points coming on service aces from Lauren Aderman and two more on kills from Catherine Wildner, before closing out Viterbo (23-10, 4-2 MCC) 25-18. The Bees jumped to a 23-15 lead in the final set before hanging on for the 25-21 win. Wildner and Amy Royer led SAU with nine kills each. Tori Matzen had six, Kait Gallagher had five and Megan O'Shea added four. Lauren Aderman shared match-high honors with 18 assists and had five of the team's eight service aces. The three helped St. Ambrose win all six matches last week, including four to win the St. Francis (Ill.) Big Guns Tournament. Aderman (pictured, top), a senior from Chicago, Ill., recorded her 3,000th career assist in a match against Saint Xavier to earn MCC Setter of the Week honors. She averaged 7.71 assists per game over the six Queen Bee victories. This season, Aderman leads the team with 719 assists. She also tops the team with 37 service aces.
DalCerro (pictured, middle) was named the MCC Libero of the Week after averaging 4.81 digs per set over the week. DalCerro, a freshman from Chicago, Ill., has a team-best 467 digs through 29 matches this season. She is second on the team with 30 service aces. O'Shea (pictured, bottom), a senior from Palos Heights, Ill., set the St. Ambrose school record for career blocks on her way to earning MCC Volleyball Player of the Week accolades.
Along with setting the block record, O'Shea averaged 2.55 kills per game over the week. This season, she leads the team with 70 total blocks and is third with 232 kills. The three players have helped the SAU volleyball team to a 23-6 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in MCC play this season. St. Ambrose had a total of four student-athletes win a weekly award from the MCC as senior Dusty Drenth was named the conference's men's golfer of the week. O'Shea, from Palos Heights, Ill., broke the previous record of 372 blocks set by Kate Leusen, of Bettendorf, Iowa, from 2001-2003. O'Shea set the mark in SAU's first match of the tournament - a 3-2 win over Montreat. She finished the four-match tournament with 386 career blocks. Trailing 10-9 in the first set, the Bees won 11 of the next 13 points, including seven straight thanks to two kills each from Kait Gallagher and Catherine Wildner, to take a 20-12 lead before closing the set out a few points later. SAU wasted little time in taking control of the second set, racing to a 10-4 lead before cruising for the 25-15 win. The third set was tight throughout with Waldorf (7-19, 2-3 MCC) leading at several points. The Warriors led as late as 20-19 but back-to-back attack errors pushed SAU in front. With the set tied at 22-22, the Bees won three straight points to close out the match. Catherine Wildner led the Bees with 11 kills. Set scores were 25-16, 25-23, 25-22 in favor of the Queen Bees. The Bees never trailed in the first set and used a 9-1 run in the middle of the set to take control 16-8. SAU did have to rally in the second and third sets. Cornell (16-8) led 16-14 in the second before the Bees rallied. With the game tied 23-23, back-to-back kills from Amy Royer and Kait Gallagher gave the set to St. Ambrose. The Rams grabbed a 15-14 lead in the final set before the Bees rolled off five straight points and held on for the win. Royer led SAU with 12 kills and had only one attack error. The Bees are 16-6 overall after the 25-18, 25-18, 25-20 win. Despite being down 2-1 and 3-2 in the first set, SAU led most of the way in the first two sets. The third set was a different story as Iowa Wesleyan (10-9, 2-2 MCC) raced to a 9-4 lead and maintained a 14-10 lead midway through the final set. But SAU responded with six straight points to grab a 16-14 lead. Catherine Wildner had two kills and Kait Gallagher added one during the surge. The Tigers knotted the game at 18-18 before SAU responded by winning seven of the final nine points, including match point on a kill from Tori Matzen. Aderman, from Chicago, Ill., averaged 6.72 assists per game and added 44 digs as the Queen Bees went 4-1 last week. She started the week with a match-high 28 assists and a team-best 16 digs in a conference win over William Penn Wednesday night. Last weekend, she finished with 93 assists and 28 digs as SAU won three of four matches at the Quad City Classic. This season, Aderman has 413 assists as SAU is off to a 13-3 start, including a 2-0 mark in conference play. The Queen Bees won the first two sets 25-15, 25-19 before letting the Statesmen sneak away with the third set 25-23. But SAU slammed the door in the fourth set, winning the final eight points of the match to take the set 25-9. Kait Gallagher finished with a match-high 11 kills. With the Bees off to a 9-2 start, Aderman leads the team with 292 assists and 13 service aces and is second on the squad with 102 digs. Aderman was one of four Bees to win a weekly award from the MCC. John Darmody was the men's cross country harrier of the week, Lauren Gunawan was the women's soccer defensive player of the week, and Ashley Dexter was the women's soccer offensive player of the week. Three Queen Bees Reach Career MilestonesSept. 21, 2009 Easily overlooked through the SAU volleyball team's 9-2 start this season, three individuals have reached career milestones. Junior libero Hannah Fischer (Frankfort, Ill.) has surpassed 1,000 digs while senior middle hitter Megan O'Shea (Palos Heights, Ill.) and junior outside hitter Amy Royer (Mokena, Ill.) each reached 1,000 career kills. Fischer was the first to reach her milestone, recording her 1,000th career dig in a 3-2 win over Trinity International in the first match of the Saint Xavier Tournament. Later that day, as part of a 3-1 win over St. Francis (Ill.), O'Shea picked up her 1,000th kill. It took Royer another 11 days to join the exclusive 1,000-kill club. She hit the mark in SAU's 3-2 win at Mount Mercy on Sept. 15. Through the Bees' first 11 matches this season, Fischer has accumulated 1,068 career digs, O'Shea has 1,042 career kills and Royer has 1,014 kills. All three players will look to add to their totals when St. Ambrose resumes Midwest Collegiate Conference play against William Penn on Wednesday. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at Lee Lohman Arena. SAU Dominates Augustana in Straight SetsSept. 18, 2009 On a night St. Ambrose head coach Bruce Billingsley was recognized for winning his 500th match earlier this season, the Queen Bees wasted little time in adding to their coach's career total. St. Ambrose dominated Augustana 25-13, 25-12, 25-12 to improve to 9-2 this season. After the Vikings grabbed an early 3-2 lead in the first set, it was all St. Ambrose. The Bees rolled off nine straight points to take an 11-2 lead and never looked back. In the second set, with an 11-7 advantage, SAU scored eight straight for a 19-7 lead. The final set was never in question as the Bees won the first 11 points to sweep their cross-river rival. As a team, St. Ambrose finished with 37 kills and only six attack errors. Catherine Wildner led the way with nine kills while Megan O'Shea, Kait Gallagher and Amy Royer each finished with eight kills. Neither O'Shea nor Royer had an attack error. Lauren Aderman handed out a match-high 23 assists. Megan Gordon finished with nine. Jackie DalCerro recorded 16 digs. Gallagher was credited with five solo blocks. Before the match, Billingsley was presented with a volleyball commemorating his 500th career win, which came in a 3-0 decision over Midland Lutheran on Aug. 29. As the St. Ambrose women’s coach since 1997, Billingsley has won 274 matches. He has a total of 309 wins at SAU, which includes his four years as the head coach of the men’s program. Billingsley started his coaching career at Marycrest, where he won nearly 200 matches while coaching both the men’s and women’s teams. SAU will host William Penn in a match slated for 7 p.m. SAU Survives in Five at Mount MercySept. 15, 2009 St. Ambrose improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference but it wasn't easy as the Bees outlasted Mount Mercy 3-2 Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids. After dropping the first set 25-22, SAU dominated the second set 25-10 and won the third to take a 2-1 lead. But the Mustangs won a tight fourth set 25-23 and grabbed a 9-6 lead in the decisive set before the Bees won 11 of the final 17 points to squeak out the win. Final set scores were 22-25, 25-10, 25-22, 23-25, 17-15 in favor of SAU. Amy Royer led three Bees in double-digit kills with 15. Kait Gallagher had 14 and Megan O'Shea finished with 11. Tori Matzen and Catherine Wildner each chipped in with eight. Lauren Aderman had a match-best 33 assists and Megan Gordon finished with 13. Set scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-22. St. Ambrose, off to a 7-2 start overall, finished with 43 kills and only 16 attack errors. Amy Royer led the way with 11 kills while Catherine Wildner added 10. Megan O'Shea and Megan Macyauski each finished with seven. Reigning MCC Setter of the Week Lauren Aderman continued her strong play with a match-high 23 assists. Megan Gordon finished with 12. Dolores Wildner had a team-best 12 digs. Jackie DalCerro added 10 digs to go along with three service aces. Aderman, a senior from Chicago, Ill., has led St. Ambrose in assists in each of the team's first eight matches as the Bees are off to a 6-2 start. She had 38 assists in the Bees' 3-2 win over Trinity International, 20 assists in a 3-1 win over St. Francis (Ill.), 32 assists in a 3-1 win over McKendree, and 18 assists in a 3-1 loss to Aquinas. Through eight matches, Aderman has 213 assists, averaging 6.7 per set. Aderman was one of four SAU student-athletes named conference player of the week. Bees Start Season 3-1 at Home Tournament Aug. 29, 2009 St. Ambrose started the 2009 season by winning three of the team's first four matches at the SAU Early Bird Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Bees defeated Robert Morris and Trinity Christian by 3-0 scores Friday before defeating Midland Lutheran 3-0 Saturday. The team suffered its first loss in a 3-1 setback to NCAA Division II Upper Iowa in the final match of the tournament. SAU's Megan O'Shea was named to the all-tournament team. With the victory over Midland Lutheran, head coach Bruce Billingsley earned his 500th career win. He has now won 268 matches with the Queen Bees. Billingsley has also won matches as coach of the SAU men's team and as the men's and women's coach at Marycrest.
